I’ve been using this plugin for years.
Now out of the blue the images on my site were taking a long time to show up.
I looked at everything for days.
Finally i decided to remove this plugin. The TTFB for images went from 1/5 seconds to 30/80 ms.

I’m not sure how that’s possible but it just is.
    Hope that helped someone.

To my knowledge, that’s only possible if those images are being generated “on demand” by a buggy plugin. Otherwise, EWWW IO does not interfere with the loading of your images in any way on the front-end of your site.

True makes no sense, must be a coincidence. Disregard it.

If you want to dig more into the “on demand” generation, just to rule that out one way or another, shoot me a message at https://ewww.io/contact-us/

I’m sure these images are not timthumb or something like that, if that’s what you meant.
They are the native wp thumbnails (150×150) and the max size capped to 640 px wide by this plugin. No other sizes are being generated, just those 2 sizes for each img.

The problem seems random, sometimes TTFB is 30ms and some other times it’s 5-10 seconds.
What confuses me is that nobody seems to be able to reproduce this. I see it on my win10 machine and win7 machine. Could be my network but it’s pretty solid fiber optic 100MB/20MB, it would be weird.

I tried changing to google dns and open dns to no effect. Briefly it fixed when i uninstalled this plugin, even if it made no sense. And of course it happened again later on.

I thought about cloudflare, i paused it, changed several settings with no avail.

I’m starting to think it could be the server. It’s an 8 core dedicated server running Ubuntu 16.04 installed by serverpilot. I have never had a problem with it. The load avg is under 1.00… All seems well.

It’s a mystery really. Don’t know what else to do.

Yeah, that’s basically what I was wondering. There are a LOT of image auto-generation scripts, so make double-sure they aren’t being auto-generated, even if you think the dimensions match an existing thumbnail, some scripts really stink at using existing images.

The thing that jumps out to me the most though, is Cloudflare. While they are pretty good for the average site, sometimes they actually introduce some variance in response times. When you pause Cloudflare, you usually need to flush your dns cache locally as well. I don’t remember the exact command for Windows, but Google should be able to help you out there ?? Then make sure that your connection is going direct to the IP address of your dedicated server using the Chrome dev tools. The network tab allows you to add a column that shows the IP address, so that’s where I would look. Chrome also caches DNS lookups, so it can be helpful to use an Incognito window too.

You certainly should be having pretty fast response times on a dedicated 8 core machine, if you can’t figure it out, try enabling a CDN just to see what happens. I believe KeyCDN will give you some free credits to test things out, we use them for the front-end of ExactDN, and they are usually really fast.

Thanks i hope it’s them, i don’t want to migrate server. I’ll keep monitoring hopefully it will correct itself. Thanks for the help!
