Inconsistent editing options

How can I find out when and where to use which element? The options and settings are different every time.
Every time I think I have slowly understood the structure, something is strange again.
For example: Example 1 shows a sub-group. Here I can set how wide this should be displayed. In picture example 2 there is also a sub-group, but this setting option is not available here! What is this? What does it depend on?
