• I’m looking for the easiest way to incorporate memberships – paid memberships with some site content only available based on membership levels – and a merchandise/conference tix e-store…and to use PayPal as the payment gateway for all of it.

Wading through the plugin possibilities and sort of getting lost in the details. It seems – and please tell me if I’m wrong – that I’ll need two separate plugins that work well together. Leastways, I haven’t found a membership plugin that’s:

    a) easy to set up,
    b) allows for multiple membership levels/types, and
    c) incorporates other ecommerce functionality.

Am I going about this wrong in trying to find one plugin that does it all?

There are actually a lot out there: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/tags/members

All the ones I know nail B, mostly hit A well (any membership plugins is going to be a bit complicated), and some do C but you can always drop a small eCommerce plugin alongside one that doesn’t if necessary: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/tags/ecommerce

Ironically, I was just reading this: https://chrislema.com/best-wordpress-membership-plugin/

In short, only you know what you want for sure, and each plugin does something better than the other. Take a look at the offerings and decide for yourself. There are many that are completely free to use or at least free to try. Think of the time you spend choosing your plugins as your first big investment in your next great site. ??

Thanks for that input, James. (I’d posted just before leaving work for the weekend or I would have responded earlier.)

That article looks helpful – I’ll have to read through it later today. The membership plugin I’ve been mucking about with is Paid Memberships Pro which, until it seemed to lose track of the pages it set up itself, was looking quite promising but I would need to, as you suggest, drop in a additional plugin to handle the merchandise/tix. I was hoping to keep it to a single plugin to keep potential conflict headaches to a minimum, but…..oh, well, eh? ??

    Thanks again!

It depends. IMO, sometimes it’s better to give critical functions their own plugin.

For example, if the store breaks, and you need to switch to a different store plugin, at least the membership system is working. ??
