I’m actually using version 4, however, the problem is this. When I try to upload media to a post

There are lots of topics like this, but all appear to be referring to older versions, that look nothing like this version….

    The error is:

Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/05. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

    any ideas?
    thanks

  • The upload folder was created by WP. Seems that the last time I uploaded an image was Dec 2010. Everything worked fine back then.

So deleting the uploads folder is not an option because the site already has several images in the media library.

Here is an image of the current permissions of the upload folder.

Try changing the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767, 775 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

Sorry to contradict, but it’s not permissions, but ownership.

I see that you are the owner – nouglydo

But the Webserver will be something else. You have find out what that is.
I presume you are on a hosted service. Your website is hosted by someone else?

You have to change your directory ownership to be the same as the webservice.

I don’t know what changed in wordpress – but I’m seeing this problem come up now, where it never did before.

not permissions, ownership. ?? sounds like a call to your hosting support. Get them toc change the ownershp of uploads to what ever the webservice ownership is.

Sorry to contradict, but it’s not permissions, but ownership.

There’s no ownership issue if you allow WordPress to create the upload folder itself. However, on some poorly configured servers, you do have to change the permissions on the wp-content folder every time a new folder needs to be created inside wp-content/uploads.

Tried all the settings . . . Nothing worked ??

I have opened a support ticket with server host (servint).

I’ll report back with what they say!

    Ok! I found the solution.

I changed the WordPress Settings/Media folder settings from full address to ‘wp-content/uploads’

The world is now a better place! Thanks for your help!

That’s great. Glad you got it going. I’ve been looking about, and seen that fix somewhere else on an older version. I think possibly because being a local path, it understands the ownership thing.
I’m on a Unix (Apple Mac) system, and don’t have that Media folder setting … not that I can find anyway ??

    Success – a great thing.
