Increase content-width

    Since I publish bilingual quotes side by side, the line length is too short. I want to stay with this theme, but as a beginner I can’t find a solution to increase Content Width.

    // Set content-width
    global $content_width;
    $content_width = 560;

    When I change this value in functions.php, nothing happens. Can anyone tell me where I can change the width of the single posts please.
