Hi, been having intermittent frontend and backend issues of alternating 500 and 502 errors. Was chatting with my hosting tech support at Hostgator and they noted this line 19:41:26 (my folder name) jetpack/class.jetpack-signature.php”, O_RDONLY) = 4 was the last file accessed for the crash that they witnessed.

The tech also noted that this file was also present: 19:41:26 open(“/my folder into)/wp-includes/certificates/ca-bundle.crt”, O_RDONLY) = 8
    7:42:54 PM

He deleted it as he thought it may have been corrupted, and replaced it with the default, but that didn’t seem to change anything.

Just trying to figure out the culprit. This started about an hour ago and comes and goes.

    Thanks!

  • Noticed this today out of the blue. If it helps, I haven’t made any additional changes involving plugins etc or updates to my theme. Literally just started showing up. I have only been editing pages in maintenance mode and it seems to have suddenly appeared while viewing page previews. I suspect something is happening with their servers that hasn’t been addressed yet. Frustrating as hell…

It is frustrating! But good to know I’m not alone at least, because I also haven’t updated any plugins/themes recently.. Do you also use Hostgator?

Yes, I am on the Hatchling plan…
My site hasn’t been live yet, so there is no type of traffic issue. Clean cache regularly and optimize my database religiously. Deactivated Jetpack, seemed to work at first, then started experiencing it again. I am not looking forward to contacting Hostgator because they are in the habit of finger pointing.

Hi, I’m having the same issue. I’ve been the whole day having 502 and 500 problems. I will contact Hostgator and ask them what’s going on. If I receive an answer I will tell you.

I’m so glad it’s not just me. Getting lots of 500/502 on both my WordPress site and SMF forums. I’ve got onto the Hostgator support about it but not expecting a response any time soon, they are terrible ??

Wow, this does appear to be a major problem! For anyone who contacts HG make sure to show them this thread because Emalek, you’re so right about the finger pointing. They’ll be more likely to think its a plugin or isolated issue and not on their end otherwise.

While we’re on the same page: has anyone on HG noticed erratic loading times since August? Ive been having MySQL database connection issues ever since.

I’ve been seriously contemplating changing hosts, because of issues like this, and as jt_vaughn stated, the problems with tech support being both slow to respond, and unable to resolve my issue. The time spent dealing with it has really affected my productivity, and I’m at my wits end.

Yes, we’ve had speed issues lately too. Mostly fine, but then at some point it’s crawling so slowly. And I open support tickets but it takes them 5 days to a WEEK to reply, by which time the initial problem is long gone. They have the audacity to reply “we checked your site and it’s fine” — of course it’s fine, the problem was a week ago!

Unfortunately we renewed for 2 years a month ago ??

    Hang in there guys.
Tinieblas, let us know what you find out and thank you for the effort.
Problem doesn’t seem to be as dominant today, but Hostgator sending out an email to let the clients know what is going on would be nice…
I will stick with them for now since I have been with them for years, but this is certainly cause for concern in the future considering I am running a Real Estate website and can’t afford a 500 error! May start shopping for faster and dedicated servers…

I know what you mean Emalek. Yeah, Hostgator never sends emails out about this stuff. That’s what makes it so frustrating. And of course the turnaround to getting a reply from a ticket takes days and/or weeks as Jt_vaughn can attest!

I just feel like in the last couple of months I’ve spent nearly 11 hours with tech support and its gotten me nowhere. And this just adds insult to injury.

I’ve considered trying their managed WP hosting, but since its a new service and they seem iffy on WP in general I can’t imagine it being smooth sailing? And they don’t allow premium themes from what I understand.

As much as the idea of switching to a new host is daunting, I just don’t know how much longer I can deal with this kind of stuff. I hear great things about WP Engine, but it sure is pricey. But when it comes to $ versus wasted time, the former seems less stressful. I’d prefer to just focus on the writing, given the technical side has always proved challenging for me.

Tinieblas thanks for taking this forward. Fingers crossed!

I agree SLIS. It’s a necessary evil. Especially with website load times having such a direct relationship to search engine ranking. the good news is I have been working all day day without any issue and my Visual Composer and Revolution Slider seem to be functioning a lot smoother. If this incident is mentioned to HG I am sure they would play dumb since they think they corrected the issue without notice. I have read about a vulnerability making it’s way around hosting companies regarding WordPress based sites. Maybe they were updating their code and caused a slow down.
I have looked into other hosts and I think I might try going with Bluehost. Many of my web developer friends swear by them. Since migration is MUCH easier then it used to be (All-In-One WP Migration plugin works fantastic btw) I may pull the trigger in the near future. Only hate the DNS waiting period…

Hi, they haven’t answered me yet but my page is working again. I’m sure this was a Hostgator error. Let’s see what they say.

Are you guys still having problems?

Mine is okay. It’s definitely HG, and not limited to just WordPress installations.

“The reason you saw the intermittent 500 error on 10/6 was because we were making upgrades to the php software. We’ve since completed those upgrades and there should be no longer any errors. Sorry for the trouble”

Thanks for informing us you were doing this beforehand!

2 hours of my life wasted looking for a solution. Also a couple of grey hair more haha

thanks for the follow up guys!

Yeah, a notification to the clients would have been necessary!
When web developers get this error, what do they do? Start modifying files to correct the issue. If it isn’t a user error, then they have just screwed up their site without notification from their host that the problem is caused by upgrades.
Who else here has known about how long HG’s PHP was outdated? I know personally it’s been no less that 2 years!

I think they thought this would go under the radar…

    HG was wrong! LOL

    Happy webbing guys!
