increase width of single line text input

Within my form, I am using the

single line text box

for much of the imput

However this only gives 17 characters wide for the user entered data, which is too small for many of the responses eg email address

Can I alter this within either the plugin php or ccss or is it something in my theme css – any help to increase this would be much appreciated
