In WP 5.0.1 and in a List Block, the “Indent List Item” toolbar button in the Gutenberg editor does not work for the first item listed in a list. However, it does work for subsequent entries. This behavior occurs whether using bullet or numbered items, and in both a new or already published page. The indent button is active. Running Twenty Fifteen theme with TinyMCE Advanced editor. Everything else, including the TinyMCE Advanced plugin, appears to work well.

  • Thank you for the report, @gbundros! I’m glad you’re seeing everything else working well.

Generally, it’s not possible to indent the first item in a list: list indenting is intended to show a sub-list belonging to the item in the parent list. I just tested in the classic editor with the TinyMCE Advanced plugin, it’s not possible to indent the first item in a list there, either.

Could you provide more information about what you’ve used in the past to indent the first item of a list?

Gary, thank you for your reply. In all honesty, I think that I don’t understand the purpose of the indent, so disregard my observation and comment. I have never tried to indent the first item in a list, but discovered its behavior as I was playing with the new block format and editor. From what you said, it is working as designed so I clearly don’t understand its intended use. Thank you again for your reply and have a wonder Holiday Season.
