The search is restricted to post type “ait-item” and posts that have the custom field “_ait-item_item-featured” and taxonomy “lang” set to “fr”. Is that correct?

They don’t need to have the custom field checked. Isn’t this only to sort results ?

That’s how your search is set up. You may want to clear out that meta_query parameter, to see if that’s blocking the results from appearing.
