    Hi,

Just installed WP successfully. After attempting to login for the first time, however, I’m getting the file directory screen titled “Index of /wp-login” instead of the dashboard. I’ve checked the list of files needed, just in case some ended up missing in my install (got the list from here: ). The files are all the same.

This is being installed on an existing site, with an existing index.html file. I tried deleting the existing index page, on the hopes that it was blocking access to the index.php page, but had no luck.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks!

Did you try adding the following to a .htaccess file?

    DirectoryIndex index.php index.html

just tried and now getting a 500 internal server error – so sorry for bothering you but wordpress is new to me – it is so powerful and we truly want to put it to use – thanks so much for your help

That shouldn’t happen. DirectoryIndex is a very simple protocol that shouldn’t conflict with anything.

Internal server errors are usually described in more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check the server error log for anything useful. If you don’t have access to your server error log, or you don’t see anything useful there, contact your hosting provider.

sent your above note to our hosting provider and suddenly the problem disappeared – thanks – now we can move onto the next step!
