• I’m not quite sure where I can ask this question, so any advice/suggestions are welcome.

I’m taking over a WordPress website from the creator. I can access the website through an online login through the website/wp-admin link (I’ve never had to download or install the WordPress files). From what I can tell, I’m using WordPress version 3.5.1. The creator has given me full administrative rights to the website so I can post entries without his approval and update pages, but I feel that I still have limitations due to me not being the website creator (for example, cannot install new plugins or embed videos into the post). The creator fully believes that he’s done that he can do with me, so I’m on my own right now.

Now, how can I be in full control of this website’s behind the scenes workings? Does having the “administrative” rights really allow me everything, or am I missing something in order to get full rights to update various items? Or is this something completely different? Any advice will be helpful, thanks.

  • If you’ve taken full control of the site, then he should’ve given you access to the site files(the web hosting details, cPanel access, db access, etc). Also, all the domain registration bit. Without that, you are relatively limited.

In terms of the WP side of things, yes, if you cannot install plugins, you do not have full control. If you can, have him give you his login information for WP. It is your site now after all, right?

Hi HostAwesome. Thanks for the response. I’ve tried to ask him for his WP login info, but he seems to believe that I already have full control and should be fine. I’ll try asking him again with this new information and see how he responds. Hopefully this will solve my issues. Thanks again.

No problem, definitely make sure to get the hosting and domain information as well.

    Best of luck –

Look in the ‘Users’ section of your admin area and see what your account is set as. It should say ‘Administrator’. If it does, then your guy is telling you the truth. If it doesn’t, or you can’t see the ‘Users’ area, then you’re not an administrator.
