This is a peculiar problem I’ve just encountered.

Normally, my footnotes work fine. However, if I insert a footnote into the middle of a paragraph[1. like so] and then, later in that paragraph, link to a website, the footnote gets really screwed up. The href attribute of the footnote link starts with a double quotation mark but tries to end with a single one, which doesn’t work. Instead, everything until the next <a> tag is incorporated into the anchor that’s supposed to link to the footnote at the bottom of the post. Things get malformed. The tags don’t end where they’re supposed to.

You can see an example of this on my site.

I know this is an old plugin, but is there any chance this could be fixed? This is a most frustrating error.

  • Hi Southwest,

since I wasn’t too happy with a lot of these footnotes plugins out there, I grabbed a developer and created a new footnotes plugin from scratch, which seems to be doing fine.. We’re motivated through all the feedback that already came back to us.
You can also give this a spin and it should fix your troubles. If not, just ask in our support forum and we’ll get back to you. You don’t need to change all your footnotes, since you can customize the shortcodes for footnotes.

Thanks, Mark! Switching to your plugin worked perfectly. I did have to change my footnotes, because I couldn’t figure out how to define a custom shortcode that would capture all the preexisting footnotes I had–which started with [1., [2., [3., and so on.

However, as I mentioned in this comment, it was easy enough to create a regular expression that found and replaced those old footnotes with the new style, and things are working smoothly now.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

Anytime. Hope you are and stay happy with our footnotes ??
