• Ok so here is my scenario. I have my own site mysite.com – I have a client who has a site that he wants converting to WordPress. So I set up a local install on my site and create him a new site on there under a subfolder on my domain. I could then repoint his existing domain to the subfolder on my site and all would be well. Except he quite correctly would like ownership of the domain so if I get run over by a bus or do not renew my domain at least his site will be unaffected. How do I best go about this, somehow I need to copy my domain install of the WordPress site to another domain, his existing site will be moving to the same host if that helps. I can only think in hindsight it may have been better to transfer his domain over now and set his site up as it currently is on the new host and then install to a subfolder there to leave the current site unaffected.
    Any advice greatfully received, thanks.

  • You would have to export the database from the old host to the new host as well as copying over the WordPress files themselves. You just have to make sure in the settings that WordPress points to the new domain, not the old one.

Thank you. What would have been the best way of approaching this if I had the time again? This must be a fairly common scenario I’d have thought, ie a new site is required but don’t want to affect the current site.

You can copy the files like I mentioned then leave the old site there and use redirects so people will be redirected to the new site when they attempt to visit the “old” site.

Thanks for your advice. I think part of the problem is that I want to re-host the site to GoDaddy at the same time as I use the one click install of WordPress whereas their current host you have to install manually – I know its not a massive deal but I prefer to use GoDaddy and this is where I have my own site hosted.
So if I am looking to re-host a site and cutover to a newly developed one at the same time this is where it gets messy but like I say it must be a fairly common thing to do.

Hey Toni, it should be fairly simple once you have installed WordPress onto the new server.

When you are logged in to your clients current WordPress site go to the Theme page and export the site template – this should copy all of the files and database files for you to re-import on the new server.

Another route that should work would be to import from the sub domain you are hosting to bring in everything – give a it a go.
