Hello and thank you for your platform!
I am absolute beginner to creating websites (i have only managed several after being built by developers) never created one myself…
I read a lot of posts with similar name, but none responded to my question regarding my situation. I noticed, everybody is very friendly and willing to help, so here I am asking for help.

I took a project of an old existing website created about 10 years ago (cPanel is managed on platform called “SHINE” Softhost Intranet Engine) and not being updated since 2013. I have no access to the old PHP account, neither the FTP where the files of the site should be kept.

As new start, we engaged into a new Hosting supporting WP and transferred the domain-there. (the previous HOST did not know about the key of authorization existing so was not able to provide – we past true an external platform to regain it and request the domain-transfer).
I manage to upload WP in cPanel at the new host.
I also created a data-base and a DB-user, and add the user to the DB.

Only when wanted to log to WP true the website:
    mywebsite.ro/wp-admin/setup-config.php
and install wordpress, i realize the old website (beside working on WP and being more beautiful than before) is still there. So i cannot finish the installation before i remove the old files?
= no ftp access, would you know another way to back up the previous website?
= i would like to put a simple “maintenance page” while working on the new website and just lunch it live when is ready?

Could you advise on finishing the installation of the WP and start building the new website?

    PS: everything is in Romanian, language that i do not speak… so that helps too (;

  • Hi

did you use this as your guide?
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress

what happens when you use the below?
    mywebsite.ro/wp-admin/install.php

you can use a maintenance page plugin such as https://en-gb.www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-maintenance-mode/

if you have a new hosting provider, is there a reason they don’t give you FTP or is there a reason nothing in the control panel?

    Hello,
    thank you for answering me…
Indeed – i read the Codex – i had some difficulties understanding all the steps so i also checked some videos on YouTube. This is how i’ve got to upload the WP-zip to the FTP of my new hosting.

    mywebsite.ro/wp-admin/install.php
= stays on “waiting for…” until “Problem loading the page”
= opened the live website (the one i want to replace)

Thank you about the suggestion – it is a plugin i also consider to use for the maintenance mode, only to get there first…

And yes, i have a FTP in the control panel of the new hosting provider – this is where i uploaded the WP.zip.
It is the previous provider that i have no access to the FTP so no access to the previous files of the old site. I was wondering how to recover the old-website-files so to be able to store them as back up and also keep the history of this site as it is not mine.

How do i finish the installation of wordpress? thank you again for your help…

    when you state mywebsite.ro

is that the same as prorider.ro ?

and it is hosted at the same place?

If it is, then you could try using something like FileZilla as an FTP and if the site is at the same place, view all files within?

Also, did you place your WordPress files in a sub folder?
If you did, that part should be part of the URL at install?

P.S. when I’ve started a project to replace an old site with WordPress, I’ve used a sub folder to upload WordPress. Created the WordPress site there, then changed the index file and that way the old site remains but WordPress takes over. No old site files are lost.

From what I can see, your old host is softhost.ro.

You might try connecting with them to obtain access to download the old website’s content and you’ll probably need to set the domain name to point at your new host.

You’ll probably also need to work with them as registrar to move your domain name to your new host if you wish to do that, though it’s not necessary as long as you can edit the DNS records and handle renewals there.

Ask your new host on instructions on how to install WordPress… they may have a ‘one button’ installer to simplify that process.

You won’t be rewriting or overwriting your old site exactly. The old hosting will quit answering when the DNS info changes. The new host will then take over.

thank you again for your response…

I used “mywebsite.ro” as replacement for the name of the website, because i read on the forum rules that the posts are public and only logged-in users can see the [The page I need help with]-line. So yes, the address i use is with the prorider domain.

I haven’t installed Filezilla yet, because the only FTP access i can grant myself would still be from the new host. There i have only the uploaded files of the new WordPress i try to put in place. How would that help?

I did place the WordPress files in a sub folder when i unzipped it – than moved everything to the “public-ftp.php” in the FileManager in ControlPanel at my new hosting-account.

Hello and thank you for your suggestion!

Indeed, i’m thinking about suggesting to the owner to of the website to address them and obtain access to download the old website’s content.

And yes, I already moved the domain to the new hosting. SoftHost did not know of the lock over the domain, so we obtained it true ROTLD.ro

Also, yes the new host have cPanel with a lot of tools and shortcuts for plugins and apps i’m interested in using for the new website…
So OK, i’ll try to get in touch with them and keep you posted

    Thank you again!

    Hello,
just a fast update while hoping to be on the right path…

I contacted the previous hosting support to ask them to change the DNS with the new-ones provided recently from our new hosting. Only they responded yet today – just now, that it is not possible. It appears this type of request is also to be passed troughs the Registry of Romanian domains and that we should address them…

So it is a quest! (:
Thank you again for your advise and help.
