• Hello,

This is my first time trying to install WordPress. I have followed the detailed installation instructions, but when I get to the final step and type https://www.xxxxxxxxx.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php into my web browser, I get this error message:

    The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

    Please help!

  • Then probably WP is not in the folder called wordpress. A real link would be beneficial to find the problem.

I checked through my ftp program and I believe WordPress is in the wordpressfolder.

    Here is a link:

    https://www.jimhawver.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

OK, WP is there. WHat I’d try to upload the wp-admin directory’s files and making sure none of them has 0 (zero) KB size.

There are no files in the wp-admin directory that have 0 KB. I’m really perplexed by this.

And is the install.php there? Did you check?
I’d still try to upload a fresh (=new download) copy of the wp-admin folder.

Yes, the install.php is in the wp-admin directory folder. I did upload a new copy and the problem hasn’t changed. Thank you for helping me, I’m sorry it’s not working.

dmbjah11… what a coincidence! I am having the EXACT same problem right now. Looks like it’s going to be a long night. *sigh*

It stinks, doesnt it. I don’t have any idea what could be causing the problem.

Well, I really don’t know what to say – except it’s always a bad idea to be hosted on anything made by MS.

    What’s MS? I’m using Stargate.com

MS = microsoft. You are hosted on a windows server.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What FTP client are you using?
Are you uploading the php files in ASCII mode and preserving directory structure?

I see mention earlier that you didn’t have anything under wp-admin. That’s not a good sign as there should be quite a few files there. Until you have the files there, life won’t be so good. Perhaps another run at uploading?

Followup question: One assumes that php and mysql are working on your server. But to check, could you create a little phpinfo.php file, with contents of:
    <? phpinfo() ?>

Put it somewhere on your site and run it. Does it produce any output?

HandySolo, thanks for trying to help.

I am using FileZilla and I am uploading the php files in ASCII mode. I think you misread a previous post, but there are files in the wp-admin directory.

I did create that phpinfo.php file and put it onto my site, but I get the same error message:

    The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

What can I do to get my php files working properly?

    Thank you very much!

Do you have Xampp(sp) installed on your windows server and do you have the correct file permissions for a windows server?
