I just tried to do an automatic upgrade to 2.8, and the installation failed:

    Downloading update from https://www.ads-software.com/wordpress-2.8.zip

    Unpacking the core update

    Verifying the unpacked files

    Installing the latest version

Warning: copy(/home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/hello.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 122

Warning: copy(/home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/hello.php) [function.copy]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 122

    Could not copy file: /home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/hello.php

    Installation Failed

My site (futilitycloset.com) is now dead — all that displays is this message:

Fatal error: Cannot instantiate non-existent class: translations in /home/cfscare/public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/l10n.php on line 408

What can I do? I can get in via FTP, but there’s no way to log in to WordPress — the installation is not working at all. (One clue — I had just removed hello.php plugin, which I never use — judging from the warnings above, that’s part of the problem. Thanks.)

  • Download the WordPress 2.8 zip from the Download link at the top of this page, extract those files to your local machine, then use FTP and follow Steps 7 and 8 of Upgrading WordPress Extended.

Thanks for the quick response. I can’t seem to delete any of the existing files: They all give error 550, Permission denied. CHMOD is 644 for all of them. What should it be? Thanks again for your help.

    error 550
means you aren’t the owner of the server (at least the user name you are connecting with)
if you are – check with webhost

Ah! Thanks. The webhost reset some permissions and everything seems okay now.

One last question: Step 7 of the upgrade process:

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended

… says not to delete the wp-images folder. I don’t seem to have a folder with that name; does it refer to wp-admin/images? Thanks again.

no – that refers to (possibly) the /wp-images folder – some folks create this – if you don’t have it don’t worry about it
