Installation help needed

ok I did it. Now what do I do?

Should I close the window wp config?
And where exactly do I go to do the fourth step?
I dont get this.
Step 4: Place the files
Now you will need to decide where on your web site you’d like your blog to appear:

In the root directory of your web site. (For example, https://example.com/)
In a subdirectory of your web site. (For example, https://example.com/blog/)
Note: The location of your root web directory in the filesystem on your web server will vary across hosting providers and operating systems. Check with your hosting provider or system administrator if you do not know where this is.

If you need to upload your files to your web server, use your favorite FTP client to upload all the contents of the wordpress directory (but not the directory itself) into the root directory of your web site.
If your files are already on your web server, and you are using shell access to install WordPress, move all of the contents of the wordpress directory (but not the directory itself) into the root directory of your web site.

If you need to upload your files to your web server, rename the wordpress directory to your desired name, then use your favorite FTP client to upload the directory to your desired location within the root directory of your web site.
If your files are already on your web server, and you are using shell access to install WordPress, move the wordpress directory to your desired location within the root directory of your web site, and rename the directory to your desired name.

Get an FTP client, access your server through FTP, create a new directory to install WordPress in, and then upload all the files you downloaded to this new directory.

Then go to install.php, which should be located inside the wp-admin folder which is inside your installation directory, using your web browser and follow the steps.

But seriously, like Jinsan said, all of this was explained in the links that were given in the beginning of this thread.

Ok I did it. Now what do I do about the fourth step?

You uploaded the files? That was the fourth step. The fifth step should be a no-brainer.

my thing ends with username_wordpress and database_wordpress so I put peanuts_wordpress and coconut_wordpress for database because that is the way it looks in the cpanel. Did I do that right?

no I didnt do the fourth step because I dont know how to upload. and now I think I might have done the third step wrong now that jinson explained it differently. *sigh* I am a techie reject.

Moose, I believe macmanx provided those links at the very start. I thought hte guides were pretty straight forward.

diamondgirl – i have some sympathy, it is a touch confusing.

you have to use your cpanel username a the prefix.

so if your cpanel username is diamondgirl then any prefix which is required will require the prefix diamondgirl before the username or password.

as I said above:

cpanelusername_database username
cpanelusername_database name
database password
leave final setting alone.

in CPanel you have something called Filemanager – click it and upload all the files wherever you want your installation to be.

So if you want your files to be in yourdomainame/blog

then create a folder called blog then just the name dir name from wordpress to blog and upload the files.

another way you might be able to ftp (transfer the files in one go) is to use your browser.

type the following: ftp://cpanelusername:cpanelpassword@yourdomain:21 if it prompts your for a password and username enter it. You shoudl then be able to drag and drop the files.

I went to my cpanel and there is a thing called fantastico and there is a link for blogs and word press is there but then there are questions there to answer and I dont know how.

Fantastico is an automatic script installation program that some hosts offer to allow their users to install various scripts on their sites. I believe that Fantastico works with WordPress, but I don’t know how reliable it is. If you want to try using Fantastico to install WordPress on your site, then you should forget about all the installation and follow the steps that Fantastico gives you, which will probably be just a few questions and clicking a few buttons.

OK, back to finding your username and database name. Jinsan’s post is good. Read it. If you don’t understand what he’s talking about, then you can read what I’m about to write right now.

Login to your cPanel. Now click on the button in the third row, third column of all the image buttons on the right side that has “MySQL Databases” printed under it. You should now see a listing of all your databases. Find the database that you’re using to install WordPress. The database name is printed in bold and is next to an orange “Delete”, and orange “Check”, and a blue “Repair.”

Beneath that you will see some underlined text that says “Users in (database)”. Below this you will find the username. It’s printed in normal letters, and is next to (Priveleges: ALL PRIVELEGES) and an orange “Delete.”

The password is simply that password that you entered when you created the username. It has not been altered with prefixes or anything by cPanel, so you can just use it as you entered it.

Now go open your wp-config-sample.php the way you did before and enter the data in as I instructed you earlier in this thread.

Now to upload your files. I like using FTP clients, but that’s just me and because I find web-based file managers a pain, but if you like the web-based stuff, then go ahead and use it.

I use FileZilla to upload files to my server. That link will take you to the Codex’s explanation of how to download, setup and connect to your server with FileZilla.

You can also use cPanel’s built in file manager to upload your files. To do that, return to the home screen of your cPanel. Click the second button in the second row titled “File Manager” on the right side of the screen. It’ll open up a new window. Find the folder where you want to upload your WordPress files. If your server is anything like mine, then you’ll probably have to go into another folder called something like public_html before you can upload the files so they can be viewed by everyone.

If you want to install WordPress to a directory, then enter that directory by clicking on the little yellow folder next to it. If the directory hasn’t been created yet, then you can create it with the “Create New Folder” link. Enter a name and press OK and then enter that new directory. You could also just install all the WordPress files in your root, but I think putting it in a directory makes things more organized.

So once you’ve decided where you want to upload your stuff, click the big arrow next to “Upload file(s)”. That brings up a bunch of little boxes for you enter filenames. Click “Browse” by one of them and find a file on your computer to upload. Any one will do. Repeat that step with different files until you’ve filled up all the boxes. Then click “Upload.” This is why I don’t like web-based file managers. With FTP, I can upload as many files I want at a time; but with web-based, you’re limited to how many boxes they give you.

So once things are uploaded, you need to go to wp-admin/install.php, which is located in your installation directory, using your web browser. Click the links when it tells you to, and you should be all done.

omg it is midnight here and I have to be up in five hours! to think this was a five minute setup. How dumb am I???????????? ok so now I will have to do the rest tomorrow. This is soooo depressing. You aren’t dumb-you are inexperienced in setting up a piece of software and the necessary bits to work with it. It’s all part of the learning curve. Just be patient and stick to it, and eventually you will get it.

fantastico will install wp in a click of the mouse for you, just make sure what the version is. My fantastico uses wp 1.2.1 so I manually install 1.5 but go for it with Fantastico, either way if it is the older version you can run an upgrade script and if it is the new version you are in business
