    Hi,

I am trying to activate the Slick Slider plugin on my site but I get the following error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘[‘ in D:\Hosting\11475658\html\wp-content\plugins\slick-slider\inc\class-options.php on line 65

It works fine when I activate it locally but not online. Any idea what the issue could be?

    Cheers

    Hi @raphjudah,
you are running an outdated version of PHP.

I tried to include multiple warnings and notes about the required minimal PHP version (currently 5.6), two of them here on www.ads-software.com: In the description (Note: Slick Slider requires at least PHP 5.6! […]) and in this sticky thread.

All you have to do is to read the mentioned thread and follow the provided link to get info on how to ask your host to update PHP.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Philipp,

Thanks for getting back so quickly. So to confirm I need to be on a version of PHP below 5.6 or above?

    Thanks,

I made a spelling mistake in my answer which may have confused you: updated version of PHP instead of outdated version of PHP.

Rule of thumb: Never downgrade. Especially regarding PHP, which gets security fixes and performance optimisations with every release.

As you may have read here (which is the aforementioned link) WordPress recommends PHP 7 (which is above PHP 5.6).

So in summary: Just ask you host to install PHP 7 for you and if he can’t it’s a bad host and you should switch to a better one ask him to install PHP 5.6.

    @raphjudah, any progress on this?

I’d love to see this thread resolved!

    Hi Phillip,

Apologies for the late reply. Yes all sorted. I was hosting with Godaddy and couldn’t believe it was using a PHP version below 5.6, and actually had to change hosting servers to upgrade.

    Thanks for your help.

    Glad you have resolved it.

I would greatly appreciate if you’d review the plugin. Thanks!
