• Hi. I’ve just discovered WordPress and installed 2.8 this afternoon, then discovered there’s 2.9.1 so decided to upgrade immediately. I had the original working and had a ‘welcome’ page but as soon as I upgraded to the latest one, nothing now works. I deleted the original (so I assume) and just installed 2.9.1. I can get the installation page and put in ‘admin’ then the password, then all I get is ‘internal server error’. Any ideas? I don’t have a clue what I’m doing with regard to MySQL or wordpress. Thanks in advance.

  • I think the easiest approach would be for you to:

    – delete all files
    – delete or empty the database

and start again with a fresh download of 2.9.1

    Hi,

You should delete the database and create a fresh one before installing 2.9.1 there is a difference in the database structure.
You can use back the same database name so that you do not need to change anything in your wp-config.php

Since you are able to install 2.8 you should be able to install 2.9.1 now

    Hope it helps!

    Well, thanks but…

I’ve deleted WordPress completely and re-downloaded and then uploaded WordPress to my server, as if starting from scratch I presume. Nothing. All I get is ‘internal server error’ again. What else can I do? I’ve put in all the right passwords and usernames (exactly as before) but this time I can’t get past the first ‘install’ step. Should I delete the whole database? I didn’t want to get rid of all of it as I don’t know what I’m doing! I’ve only deleted the ‘user’ part.

    Help!!!

What versions of PHP and SQL are on your server?

Right. My server says it’s PHP 4 point something. Yes I know it should be 5 but then WordPress says it’ll work without that being so.

I’ve now deleted everything, including the database and have started from scratch. I’ve re-uploaded (for the 3rd bloody time) version 2.9.1. I go to the ‘install’ step and exactly the same thing happens: ‘internal server error’. I must be doing something, but I did EXACTLY what I did with 2.8.

    ???

Assuming nothing has changed at my server’s end (it hasn’t) then there must be something that differs between 2.8 and 2.9. The tables were set up when I installed 2.8, but now they won’t.

Sorry, but you’ll probably need PHP 5.something. I know, I know, it says it works with 4.x but a LOT of people have had problems. Ask your host to upgrade you, please.

Yep, all fine with PHP 5, thanks for your help.

Perhaps WordPress should tell everyone it DOES need 5 to save people a lot of aggravation ??

It actually has been known to work on 4.x. It’s a very odd set of circumstances that causes this to happen, and I think they’ll be changing the reqs for v3.0 because of all this, but … Can’t say for sure.

The forum mods (who see these) don’t all have access to edit the requirements doc, alas.
