• Installed WordPress from Dream Host…Is it on my computer? I dont see it on my hard drive after I went through the installation. Do I need to do more?

I have loosely constructed 5 pages to edit and design as I go along. I do this through the dash board but am interested in having on my HD when I am offline and want to do some designing of pages and then (FTP) upload later.

Any advice in proceeding from here? I just started working but haven’t really read much.

    Thanks,

    Thorne

  • WordPress is completely resident on your web host, DreamHost in your case. Any web pages you design, are designed and stored in a database on your web host.

This is a huge advantage, in that work on your web site does not require access to your computer. It can be done from anywhere, but is protected by your ID and password.

The only way to get WordPress “on your hard drive” is to turn your computer into a web host, which can be done for free, but does require a bit more expertise (and software setup) than using a commercial web host like DreamHost.

    Ok, thought so, thanks.

So, for adding plug ins, images, video, audio and themes (custom and template) I would load them through the dashboard for customized look and feel?

Where could I get a theme template that would be kid looking or related. I am setting up a page for pediatric therapy (OT and Speech).

    I totally appreciate your response.

Sorry I can’t recommend a Kid Looking – but there should be at least one or two that should work.

Although it it possible to use FTP to upload media to your web site, and then create a link to it through WordPress, doing it through the dashboard lets you use the WordPress Media Library and Gallery (or alternative/enhanced versions provided by plug-ins). Which provides captioning, automatic resizing to multiple sizes for .jpg’s, and even just the organizational issue of simple cataloguing for easy to find access later.
