    Hi there,

So I’m new to WordPress and in a misguided attempt to try and increase the speed of my website I installed and experimented with the following cache / optimization tools:

    Async JS and CSS
    Autoptimize
Remove query strings from static resources
    Query Strings Remover
    Simple Image Sizes
    WP Fastest Cache
    WP Super Cache
    W3 Total Cache

I have since learnt that you’re only supposed to install one so I’ve deactivated and deleted all of these except for W3 Total Cache. I’ve followed some instructions on the right settings to optimize W3 Total Cache and Firebug says I have no errors which is great.

The problems I’m having are two fold.

    1) My website now appears to having missing graphics.
    2) Whenever I input custom css it doesn’t work. I’ve been told the reason for this is that I haven’t removed each of the cache plugins properly. I was advised to look up how to remove each of the plugins. Which I attempted, but most don’t have any information beyond ‘deactivate and delete’. I’ve been told to also ‘remove the define’ in .htaccess. I had a go at this and removed a define for WP Super Cache, couldn’t see any information in there for any other plugins and nothing changed.

    So my questions are:

Is my problem definitely cache related? If so what can I do about it? At the moment I can see my only option as a complete reinstall of WordPress, what do you guys think?

    Here’s a link to my website: https://www.sleepofyourdreams.com/

    Thanks

Also my graphics are no longer responsive when viewed on mobile. (I’m using an Android).

    Hi again,

I had a look at the W3 Total Cache plugin site and I’m not sure if the plugin is really working – as you can see a lot of people report it broken with wordpress 4.4.2.

Anyway, sorry to ask, but do you need a Cache optimization tool? Just wondering since the site doesn’t seem so big or slow.

    Hi MrSlartibartfast,

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

So first here’s where I am up to:

Disabled all my cache optimization plugins and deleted them all.

Now, the website is responsive and there are no errors. I also entered your code into the child theme css that you mentioned in the other forum and now the text has disappeared from the portfolio image, finally!

    Thanks for that.

But the problem I have now ties in with your question of do I need a cache optimization tool.

The answer is I think so, my website on gtmetrix is showing up as having speeds of around 50 – 60%. (It may have appeared higher when you tested it earlier because the W3 Total Cache plugin would still have been active).

Is there a way for me to speed this up without using W3 Total Cache? I tried this originally using other optimization plugins and none seemed to have as strong an effect, which is why I ended up downloading so many in the first place.

Or is my website slow because I have rogue elements from cache plugins I haven’t managed to properly uninstall?

    Thanks

    Hi Soyd,

Nice to hear the css finally worked ??

I don’t use these chaching plugins to speed up the website, so I don’t want to give some ill advice about the caching plugin(s).
On websites I’m working on I do as much optimization on the parts I have know about (image size, mobile display optimizing, etc.).

Maybe its a good approach to get the site to look the way that you want it. (with a different theme? that one you used before..?) and as last step add the caching plugin?
