    Help a noob! =)
    Installed WP via Fantastico in cPanel. (WP 5 minute install thing sounded way too complicated so I went with the ‘easy’ Fantastico option…)
    Followed admin link provided in confirmation email- fail… browser returned ‘Oops! Google Chrome could not find ____.com.au’
    Attempted accessing the link via multiple different browsers and devices- all unable to locate server/ address etc.
    Have cleared cache and cookies.

    Any other ideas on how to fix this beyond ‘wait and see’?

    Thank you in advance, I have no idea how any of this stuff works and am getting dangerously close to chucking my macbook out of the window!

    =)

  • Do you have a URL we can look at to see if we can determine whats going on?

    It appears that your domain is not resolving correctly. I’ve tried to ping the domain and not got a response. When did you purchase the domain? Typically, it takes 24 hours for the domain name to resolve once it is purchased. Did you purchase it with the hosting package?

    Oh okay, that could very well be the issue as it is a new domain… I purchased the domain name and web hosting services via crazy domains this morning.
    Will wait overnight and hopefully it will be working by tomorrow, will let you know of the outcome- thank you for your help!

    It looks like the dns records have not been created.

    Your namesevers are:
    ns1.dnspackage.com
    ns2.dnspackage.com

    $ dig @ns1.dnspackage.com brightowls.com.au

    ; <<>> DiG 9.7.3 <<>> @ns1.dnspackage.com brightowls.com.au
    ; (1 server found)
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

    $ dig @ns2.dnspackage.com brightowls.com.au

    ; <<>> DiG 9.7.3 <<>> @ns2.dnspackage.com brightowls.com.au
    ; (1 server found)
    ;; global options: +cmd
    ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

    Are you sure you created the DNS records and they are correct ?

    Thread Starter LucyLocket

    (@lucylocket)

    I’m afraid I have absolutely no idea what that means/ if I’ve done that/ if they are correct!
    I just followed the instructions on WP for installation via Fantastico, haven’t done anything more than filling in the info required… =/

    That may be true but if the DNS records have not been created and populated, which they should be by now, the domain will never work.

    You need to find out if the owner did anymore then just buy the domain name. DNS isn’t created when you do that, it has to be create by the owner or the technical person that has access to the DNS server.

    (@lucylocket)

    Ok, well I purchased domain hosting and web hosting via crazydomains.com.au
    how do I figure out what is happening with the DNS records?

    Thread Starter LucyLocket

    (@lucylocket)

    Do I need to purchase a DNA hosting package in conjunction with the web and domain hosting services? I spoke to customer service yesterday and they didn’t mention that being a requirement… which is odd since companies such as this would typically be eager to flog anything they could!

    No you shouldn’t need to purchase a DNS package. DNS isn’t anything like wordpress or cpanel. It’s a whole new language and it takes a tech to do this.

    However most registrars offer a web based gui that will guide a newbie like you to get dns working. Ask the people where you bought the domain from, they should be able to tell you.

    Will do, thanks for your help Scott =)

    Just spoke with customer care, they are updating the name servers which will supposedly fix everything, fingers crossed this works.

    Yup they got it working now.

    $ host brightowls.com.au
    brightowls.com.au has address 203.170.86.193
    brightowls.com.au mail is handled by 10 mx2.syra.net.au.
    brightowls.com.au mail is handled by 0 mail.brightowls.com.au.

    Glad I was able to point you in the right direction.
