• I have wordpress on one domain, and will soon be putting it on another domain. Should I enter in the same database information for each site (I will be using separate install directories)? I have 24 unused mySQL databases from my host, so that isn’t a problem.

Eventually, I *might* have enough domains so that it is no longer feasible to have separate installations for each one. I want to make sure if I need to export the data from the databases, I will be able to keep everything separate and organized. In case I opt to go for one of the multi-domain solutions (WPmu or something similar).

Basically, in case you couldn’t tell, I don’t know a whole lot about how databases work (beyond backing them up, I never touch them). I just don’t want to combine the databases of separate WP installs and have it come back to bite me when I need to change something.

  • In my opinion, sharing a database between two separate WordPress installations is just another piece of complexity I don’t need. As I mentally go back over the things I’ve done in the last 8 months since I started to seriously use WordPress, many of them would have been a lot harder if I didn’t have one database per WordPress.

Installing a new version is a good example. I want to do only one WordPress domain/installation at a time. I want to be able to back it up, autoupgrade it, apply any pre-staged modifications, test and, if it fails, immediately do a restore of the database. Not feasible when sharing a database.
