• I am trying to install WP on my home PC. I have downloaded WAMP and WP (from WP.org). First, I installed WAMP. I think I have done something wrong because the information I found on a tutorial said “After successfully installing and launching WAMP, look for the “W” icon in your taskbar notification area.” I don’t get a “W” of any color on my taskbar. Also, if I try to open WAMP from the desktop icon, it won’t open (I don’t know if it is even supposed to open). But, since the “W” doesn’t appear, I think I have done something wrong. I unzipped the WordPress download into the folder: Local Disk (C:)/wamp64, but I haven’t tried opening it yet . I’m waiting until I get clarification on the WAMP setup (I don’t want to compound or disguise any possible setup problems). It is possible that I’m okay to proceed, but it seems more likely to me that I have screwed up somehow. Can anybody help? I am using Windows 10. Thanks!

  • When you open the desktop shortcut the ‘W’ tray icon appears, in case it isn’t showing already.

To test if WAMP is working properly, you can simply open a browser and try to access the URL: https://localhost
If everything is good, a detailed Server Configuration page will be loaded.

The installation is pretty straight forward, and if it didn’t work out, I recommend you to uninstall WAMP and try to install it again after a reboot.

You can refer to this tutorial during the new installation, and always check if you picked the right version, either x86 or x64 according to you OS:

Mateaus, I did what you said and it worked! Thanks! I still have problems though: I saved a temporary WordPress site and closed my browser. Now, I don’t know how to get back to the site to work on it. If I go to the green WAMP icon in my taskbar and to YourVirtualHosts/localhost, I get what looks like where I probably should go, but when I click on my project (which I called tempsite)I get a page that says: This site can’t be reached tempsite’s server IP address could not be found. I don’t know if this is the way to open the project or not, but if it is, something is still wrong. Can you possibly help?
    Thanks again!

    Hello Mike,

I followed the steps to install WAMP and was able to recreate the problem you’re having. The problem is that clicking on localhost, and then click on your project results in the address being truncated. So instead of reading localhost/tempsite it reads just tempsite. Try typing into your address bar localhost/tempsite/wp-admin. Let me know if that helps!

    The fix worked! Thanks!
I had trouble getting into the site today, until I clicked on my WAMP icon on my desktop to, I guess, initialize WAMP before trying to open the site. Is that that standard operating procedure (initialize WAMP first)? Until this happened, I was wondering why even keep the WAMP icon on my desktop? I was thinking about deleting it.
Thanks again for all your help, Marcus!

    Happy to help!

Regarding WAMP, initializing WAMP is a necessary first step since WAMP will allow your computer to act as the server for your WordPress website. If WAMP is off/not initialized, no server, no website. I’d keep the WAMP icon anywhere I can easily get at it.

    Hope that made sense,
    Marcus
