• I’m trying to install WordPress over the top of a preexisting website (the site is https://www.michelesibiloni.com for those who would like to have a look). I’ve created an instance on the hosting (which is Gandi), uploaded the WP files via sFTP (to the ‘htdocs’ directory) and created a database. But when I navigate to michelesibiloni.com/wp-admin/install.php I get nothing except an apologetic 404 message. Does anybody have any clue what might be wrong?

(Please note- I have re-uploaded the old site temporarily while I figure out how to install WP, so that is why if you visit you will still see the old site).

I have been trying to figure this out for two days now, and it’s got me totally stumped (though I am very inexperienced, so that probably explains it). Any help really, really appreciated.

  • I can’t find any signs of WordPress on that domain. I’d suggest installing WP in a subfolder (eg michelesibiloni.com/wp) so that you can keep the old site in place whilst you develop the new one. Then, when you are ready to take the old site down, see Giving WordPress Its Own Directory.

Thanks so much Esmi. The wordpress files are uploaded to /lamp0/web/vhosts/wordpress.example.com/htdocs and I’ve checked- they’re all there.

I’ve created a subfolder called ‘wp’ and uploaded everything there too. Can you see any sign of it now?

    Sorry but no. ??

I think you’re uploading WordPress outside your document root. What is the path to the folder that holds your current root index.html file.

This is where it becomes painfully clear the limited extent of my knowledge… I’m uploading to the same directory which contains the index.php file (then into the subfolder wp within that directory) which must be the root I think. I can see the index file in the same folder as the wp file on the FTP pane. Thanks again for taking the time.

Can you check with your hosts that everything is being uploaded to the correct place? Paths do vary from host to host but there are elements of the path quoted above that don’t look quite right to me.

Installed wp in a subdirectory of my web site https://www.freepopcorns.net. The subdirectory is ‘decine’, but when I try to access https://www.freepopcorns.net/decine/ i get a 404 error. Via FTP, I can perfectly access both the www root directory and the decine directory. Any hint about what is wrong? Thanks
