Hi,

I’m having trouble with installing WP on my local server. I’m using MAMP and have got to the point where I choose a language for WP to run in, then it takes me to the login database name, username, password. I’ve checked my wp-config-sample and the username and password are the same as I am using, but it keeps saying it has error establishing database connection.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

In answer to the above, yes I am sure username and password are correct.
Yes I am certain that hostname is identical
Yes I am sure the database server is running.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? I have even tried installing AMPPS to be sure and it doesn’t work with that either.

Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you so much for your reply. WordPress was downloaded and installed ok, and in the right file, also wp-config was all ok.

What I discovered in the end, incase anyone in the future has a similar thing with MAMP, is that on the localhost/MAMP page there is ‘My Website’. I just clicked that link and it took me to the WordPress enter site title, username and pw, it completely skipped the page needing to enter database name, wp-config u/n and p/w.

What about to try other enviroments like Kalabox or Docker?

This method is pretty straight forward!

If you are a beginner and want to start working on WordPress without spending much time on infrastructure try Kalabox

If you want to learn a lot!

Try to use docker with terminal, if you get stuck you can go and use the docker GUI Kitematic or vagrant(vagrant takes a lot of time to get used to)
