• Have a client that has an existing site xyz.com
They have been rebuilding the site using wordpress at xyz.com/blog/

They now want that to become the new live site. I was able to install WP on the root directory and get everything link up properly. The WP install is working fine. However, the site also has a separate members are that’s not part of wordpress that I’m trying to link to at: xyz.com/private/members/index.htm

When I try to access that link from WordPress, I get an Ooops, page not found.

I know if has something to do with the htaccess file rewrite, but having a very hard time locating any documentation that is helpful. I tried making the members area a subdomain, but that didn’t work either and it’s not something I really want to do as most of the members already have xyz.com/private/members/index.htm bookmarked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there, I have a similar problem. I was upgrading a client’s website and
the wordpress site is sitting within a “wordpress” folder that sits on the root. I have now archived and deleted the old website and I want to move the new wordpress site out of the “wordpress” folder and into the root directory. Right now I have a redirect page appear when you go to the index of the website.

Just worried I may break a whole bunch of links if I just move the contents over via FTP. Is it a pretty straightforward process?

You both can use wordpress from directory so you do not break any links and you do not have to move files and folder just copy index.php in root you will find instructions here

I tried that method, but with the index.php and htaccess file being in the root, any link to a non wordpress page will not display. Again, I was able to get the wp site up and running without a problem, but when I call a specific url: xyz.com/private/members/index.htm from the wp site, the link becomes invalid. As soon as I rename the index.php in the root directory and restore the original root index.html, then the link to the member’s section works fine.
