• Hi

I can’t get into my website and have received this message:

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I recently installed the latest version of wordpress.

I apologise in advance – I struggle with technical stuff at the best of times. My host said that I need to replace the access code with default wordpress .htaccess codes.

How on earth do I do this, or find the default access code? Also has anyone else found a way to fix this – who can explain it to a technical dummy!

  • I think reading between the lines what may be being suggested to you is to update your .htaccess file. This is a file that is at the root of your site (usually) and contains a range of information about (in simple terms) how the site should behave.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Htaccess

Now, usually you’d access this using an ftp program. If you are using a Mac then cyberduck or if windows something like Filezilla.

How do you update this with WordPress specific information? Well you can go to Settings > Permlinks (under your WordPress admin. Then you can save this and it will give you what to update your .htacess file with.

However, I’m not 100% convinced this will be the issue that is preventing you accessing your site. So, if you can try the above then perhaps report back and maybe update your hosting company that you have done that. If they are asking you to do that it’s best to.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

I’ll give that a try…anything to stop me from banging my head against a brick wall.
