Internal Server Error every time I update WooCommerce

    Every time I update WooCommerce I get the following error:

    DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN”

    Update failed: 500
    Internal Server Error

    The site then goes into maintenance mode. I have learned how to delete the maintenance mode file from the root and then delete the WooCommerce folder and reinstall it. A couple of times I have had to restore the entire site from a backup.

    This is the only plugin that causes this issue.

    Here’s the status log, but this is after I reinstalled it. Not sure where to find the error logs, if they still exist (since I deleted the WooCommerce folder before reinstallation).

    This sounds like a fatal error. Can you retrieve the debug log from this file path: wp-content/debug.log and paste the most recent entries here?

    If you can access your backend still: WooCommerce tries to log fatal errors for you as well. Here is our documentation on how to find and review WooCommerce error logs:?

    500 Internal server errors could be due to a variety of reasons. Can you please try and see if any of the solutions discussed in this tutorial work in your case? https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/http-500-internal-server-error

    Hi @anastas10,

    Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I don’t have a debug.log. As I was preparing last night’s message I found instructions on how to enable that, so the next time this happens (it happens every time I update WC), I will be able to capture the error.

    In WooCommerce status, there is no “fatal-errors.log”, only “wc-services” going back to 2022-11-28. Which is weird because in order to fix my installation I had to delete the WooCommerce folder in my WP plugins directory so the new one would install, but maybe there is a log hidden in another folder (e.g. “woocommerce-services”).

    I understand that this only happens every time you update WC.

    If you would like to test once again to find the culprit of this issue, I’d recommend cloning your site to a staging environment without modifying your live site or impacting customers. Many hosts provide staging facilities, so it’s worth checking in with them. It’s also possible to do it using the free WP Staging plugin.

    Then, please provide the fatal error logs (if any) under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.

    Yes, I’ve just created a staging site, so the next time WC updates, I’ll test it out there. Hopefully it will save a fatal error log this time. Would that be located in the WC folder? As I said, I have to delete that before I reinstall, but I’ll look before I delete. The other logs show up after the WC folder is deleted (see previous message). Where is the fatal error log stored?
