Could you help me please. I’m very new to wordpress. I have checked the forum to see if someone has posted this question before but I can’t find a question on this forum similar enough to mine to be of sufficient help.
I’m trying to access “https://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php” using Internet Explorer so that I can continue the wordpress installation (I already have xampp installed and wordpress downloaded onto my local computer) but I keep getting message from internet explorer saying page cannot be displayed.

I would appreciate any advice on how to overcome this. I am very very new to wordpress and my knowledge levels are very low.

    Much Thanks

  • Please answer these questions mate:
    1) What is your OS?
    2) Do you have your port 80 open?
    3) If yes, do you have a firewall?
    4) If yes, have you checked if it blocks HTTP requests?
    5) Do you have a HTTPd?
    6) Do you have PHP installed?

What do you get if you just go to https://localhost ?

I went through the list you gave and it was port 80 that was causing the problem – it was not open so I have now opened it (after looking up what port 80 meant!) and it seems to have done the trick.

    Much thanks for your help

Glad to be of help. =)

I’m having the same problem (also new to WordPress). I used xampp.exe (lite) on my root drive. according to the tutorials on tamba2.org.uk and downloaded wordpress in a zip file.

When I try to access …localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php I get the following displayed on IE browser:

    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.
? Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
? Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
? Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

I don’t know if port 80 is open and don’t know how to find out.
I’m running it on Windows XP Home edition. I’m using Windows (software) Firewall.

    Can you help?

    Thanks
    Dan
