I have checked forums and haven’t quite found my scenario so I hope someone can help me.

I will be setting up a private members’ only www.ads-software.com site in the coming weeks for my community organisation. All content will be private and membership will be by invitation only (there will be about 70 members). Ideally I would like for members to be able to login on their first visit using their membership no as username and either their date of birth or email address as the password (or some similar method). They would then be required to change their password for future use. I assume I would need to send each potential member an email with a link for them to login using the method above.

Does anyone know of a plugin that would be able to do this or else have advice on how to achieve it? I have no expertise in creating plugins myself.

If I was able to set up the registration process as above I assume that I would just then follow the procedures for making the site private as has been outlined in various other forums threads?

I currently have a public site (which I set up for a different organisation) but my knowledge of WordPress is pretty basic.

  • Wombo55, sounds like you could do this by just adding the users to WP yourself as an admin. You can set the password and check the option to have the login information emailed to the user.

Then, as you say, you can just lock down the site using a plugin like Paid Memberships Pro, or other member plugins.

Oh cool. I wasn’t sure if something that simple would be secure enough, but I’ll give it a try.

    Thanks for your help strangerstudios

Ok. I have set up the site use the Admired theme and with wp-members for the user access control. I have turned off registration because I am registering all members of the group myself and sending them their username (their membership number of the organisation) and password. I have checked the box to send an email to the newly registered member with the username and password.

However the email directs them to a generic WordPress login box instead of the home page of my site(or a special login page on the site) which I would prefer. Also there is no “covering letter” text in the email, just the username, password and the redirect link. I assume that I would need to change the .php at some point, but as I don’t know or understand .php I thought I should check here for advice.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Wombo55, you’re using wp-members (not Paid Memberships Pro) so I can’t help you too much.

But you could use a plugin like Theme My Login (https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/theme-my-login/) to theme your login page.

I believe the Better Emails plugin (https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/wp-better-emails/) will allow you to theme your emails better.

Thanks strangerstudios I have installed Theme My Login and it looks as if it will do the trick for me.

I have already installed the Better Emails plugin and it certainly does create a better looking email, however I still don’t know how to add extra content (ie text) to the email.

Again, thanks for your help so far and any more you can give me
