I add the ip, and I can use another tracking software to see that that IP is still visiting my site. I try blocking my own IP then using a VPN, but can still access using the blocked ip. WHy is it not blocking?

  • I have the same issue.
Blocked IP continue to sign up as user every day.
    How is that possible?

    Hi,

If you are blocking an IP address using the Block IP button on the Live Traffic page then it is only a temporary block.

The time the IP is blocked for is determined by the option How long is an IP address blocked when it breaks a rule. This option is in the Rate Limiting section on the All Options page.

The default block time is 5 minutes – so you can block an IP and then 5 minutes later it will be unblocked. This may explain the behaviour that you are seeing.

Once an IP is temporarily blocked you can, if you want to, permanently block it from the Blocking page.

    Sure, but
I set the blocking on PERMANENT on all ip-addresses,
but they are not blocked anyways.

    Hi @werny,

Thank you for the screenshot of your custom permanent IP blocks. Are you sure that the user that is signing up again every day isn’t using a different IP address each time?

Do you see those IP addresses that you have blocked showing visits to your site with a 200 OK response code in your “Live Traffic” page feed (after they have been blocked)?

If you do see a 200 OK response code in your Live Traffic page feed for visits from an IP address that is blocked then make sure that the toggle switch is set to ON for the option “Enable Rate Limiting and Advanced Blocking“.

This option is in the “Rate Limiting” section on the “All Options” page.

    Thanks.

    Hi @werny,

Perhaps you didn’t see my last reply so I have copied it again for you below.

Blocking IP’s seems to be absolutely useless for me as well.
I’ve blocked hundreds of IP’s with 0 results.
Unless it’s a brute force or similar attack the blocked IP addresses are still able to 200 the site. I’ve also blocked them on the GoDaddy hosting server which is also a complete joke since the CIDR blocks never populate and after months of entering IP’s they just aren’t there.
Using WordFence may be a mistake and trying to manually block IP’s in the .htaccess returns a 500.
I think the real solution is dumping WordPress and all it’s over glorified uselessness.
    No WordPress, No Problems.
I have another cms that I put together that has none of these problems, wanna buy it?

    Hi @maelbolgia

IP blocks are temporary and by default have a short expiration time, unless you manually block an IP address permanently on the Blocking page using the advanced blocking options. This is the most likely cause of your situation.

We also don’t recommend permanently blocking hundreds of IP addresses which you can read about here:

Should I Permanently Block IPs That I See Wordfence Blocking?

If you are seeing a 500 Internal Server Error response status code when modifying your .htaccess file then your code most likely contains errors.

    Thank you.
