IPTC metadata gets smushed away
-
Hello,
I’ve just recently gave Smush another go and I’m quite fond of the image size reduction it achieves.
There is one problem though, and for me, it is of the “show stopper”. It appears that Smush also removes some IPTC metadata that was apparently deemed less important… namely Sublocation, Location, Province, Country. Maybe others as well?
I’m using a plugin (Media Library Assistant) to auto-populate the WP-attachments’s title, caption, etc. customized, relying on the IPTC data in the image (I enter this information in Lightroom, my DAM software, anyway – might as well use it!).
Without Smush, I’m getting my customized image caption in the style of “title — sublocation, location, province, country.” (example: https://www.alex-kunz.com/portfolio/arbres-monochromatique/snowy-oaks/ – the caption is automatically generated from my IPTC metadata.)
With Smush active, this simply doesn’t work, the IPTC metadata that Media Library Assistant wants to extract from the image seems to be gone.
I already optimize the metadata (EXIF & IPTC) when I export images from Lightroom for the web (using a Lightroom plugin called “Metadata Wrangler”), leaving only those fields in the file that I actually want there.
Thus, it would be quite handy if Smush would get a configuration switch that lets me choose whether I want to compress the metadata, or leave it alone entirely.
The way it is now, using Smush is too time consuming, since I have to enter the data that I already had in the file again in WordPress.
Thanks for looking into it
Alexander.
