• Hello,

I’ve just recently gave Smush another go and I’m quite fond of the image size reduction it achieves.

There is one problem though, and for me, it is of the “show stopper”. It appears that Smush also removes some IPTC metadata that was apparently deemed less important… namely Sublocation, Location, Province, Country. Maybe others as well?

I’m using a plugin (Media Library Assistant) to auto-populate the WP-attachments’s title, caption, etc. customized, relying on the IPTC data in the image (I enter this information in Lightroom, my DAM software, anyway – might as well use it!).

Without Smush, I’m getting my customized image caption in the style of “title — sublocation, location, province, country.” (example: https://www.alex-kunz.com/portfolio/arbres-monochromatique/snowy-oaks/ – the caption is automatically generated from my IPTC metadata.)

With Smush active, this simply doesn’t work, the IPTC metadata that Media Library Assistant wants to extract from the image seems to be gone.

I already optimize the metadata (EXIF & IPTC) when I export images from Lightroom for the web (using a Lightroom plugin called “Metadata Wrangler”), leaving only those fields in the file that I actually want there.

Thus, it would be quite handy if Smush would get a configuration switch that lets me choose whether I want to compress the metadata, or leave it alone entirely.

The way it is now, using Smush is too time consuming, since I have to enter the data that I already had in the file again in WordPress.

    Thanks for looking into it
    Alexander.

  • Hey there Alexander,

    Hope you’re well today!

Sorry for the late response and thank you for the feedback ??

WP Smush plugin does remove IPTC and EXIF metadata in the smushing process. I’ve talked to our plugin developer and he told me that we already have featured request to add option that will allow you to select if you want that removed that or not.

I can’t provide ETA on when this will be added to the plugin but it is something that is on a roadmap of features for future versions.

    Have a great weekend ??

    Best regards,
    Bojan

    Hey seezee,

    How are you doing today?

This is still just a feature we’re looking to implement in the plugin, not something that we’re currently working on but definitely a feature we’re looking to add in the future.

    Have a nice day!

    Best regards,
    Bojan

Thanks for the reply, Bojan. This is, for me at least, a deal breaker until it is adopted.

As a photographer, I need to protect my images from unauthorized use. One way I do this is by including IPTC & EXIF data, including copyright data, keywords, titles & captions, & GPS data, in every image. This makes it easier to track unauthorized use and also to prove ownership. It also increases potential fees for unauthorized use, since altering or removing metadata from a copyright work can trigger higher penalties in a court case.

    Hey seezee,

    Sorry to hear that ??

I understand your situation here. We do intend on implementing this among other features but as much as we’d like to have them all now we can’t as developing such feature requires a lot of time.

Hopefully once we do have this you’ll consider using our plugin ??

    Best regards,
    Bojan
