Is 2.3.1 upgrade absolutely necessary?

  • I am a total noob to blogging and WP in particular. After reading all of the documentation regarding the upgrade installation, my eyes are bleeding and I don’t have an ounce of confidence doing this upgrade. I know zip, zero, nada about SQL or anything else involved. Can I just go about my merry way with the current version and remain blissfully ignorant or is the upgrade mandatory?

  • It’s always better to be running the current version so to get all the bug fixes and security fixes.

    But with that said, it is not mandatory to upgrade, just advisable.

    Regardless if you began using WordPress just 3 seconds ago, let me strongly recommend you learn how to backup both your WordPress files and WordPress database. (See WordPress Backups).

    Thank you, Michael. I was just reading about backing up WP and, so far, it’s a bit intimidating. I think I’ll try the plugin and see what happens.
