• I keep hearing everywhere that FTP is not safe. Password and files are transferred unencrypted. I want to use my own NAS for backup and I can′t get FTP over SSL to work. When I google the problem there seems to be few people worried about this problem. Is there any danger in using regular FTP for backups? What can an evil person do with my backup file if he gets to it?

  • Using FTP for any purpose is bad. Like IE 6, FTP may take years to go off.

That evil person may get all the credentials found in wp-config.php . There are lot of things that could be done with it.

That said, as long as your site has fewer visitors, that’s nothing much to worry. Once it starts to grow, the bad guys may have an eye on your site too, through automated hacking attempts.
