• I was messing around with configurations. I have a wildcard setup for my subdomain type multisite installation. And what I have done is, i have disabled domain mapping plugin, cleared all caches on site and on my mac, changed the sites domain setting as a network admin to my top level domain; example.com , waited enough time for propagation and my domains work without any problems….

So is this plugin no longer needed or does something other than this which I do not understand ? Is there something weird on my side ?

Forgot to add, of course the domains I want to add are parked to the root folder of my multisite installation.

Can you explain in more detail what you have done? It looks like since WP 4.2 a lot of people have issues with domain mapping.

I ran some searches but couldnt find anything about DM being added to core (other then plans to do so from 2 years ago :()

    Cheers,

Well, i dont know what to explain further.
1- I pointed my domains to the root folder of my multisite.
2- Via network admind dashboard, I changed the subdomains to actual tld domains.
3- Without any mapping, they seem to work without any problems. Cant see any difference when this plugin is setup and is not setup. Only thing I noticed is that the plugin in someway looks like helping the admin redirect issue, but I know have the plugin setup (just to be safe), and still have the issue. So there is literally no difference I can see when this plugin is active and when its not…

Hi plugindoruk, remember that if you disable Domain Mapping, you also need to make sure sunrise is off.

Still, in theory — if you are the only one that is going to manage site domain names — you can indeed just change each sites domain name on a site-per-site basis in the network admin. In my experience, WordPress does not care about the domain name not being a sub(dom/dir) of the primary domain. I did a similar experiment in the days when Multisite was called MU.

The Domain Mapping plugin however handles things a little bit different and allows both Super Admin as site admins to control their domain names, add more than one and switch between them easily. This is not possible when doing it without domain mapping plugin.

There might be other effects too (plugins/themes) but I have not experimented long enough to run into any. And sure, Domain Mapping is not completely problem free in combo with other plugins like WordPress HTTPS either…

No, domain mapping is not built into the WordPress core. It might be sometime in 2016.

I was going to guess that what you are doing is site1.example.com and site2.example.com (as a subdomain installation as you mentioned) or in a subfolder setup, example.com/site1/, example.com/site2/ .

This would be simply multi-site. No domain mapping needed.

But then I noticed you said you “changed the subdomains to actual tld domains”. That does need the Domain Mapping plugin (or serious server configuration skill to do it manually).

I think what is going on is with “i have disabled domain mapping plugin”. If you installed the plugin properly, you moved files into specific locations, where they get run Always; all you did was disable the management screen.

@aron Prins: If you are having problems with the Domain Mapping plugin, it has to be installed properly, and configured in a very specific way. I have detailed Domain Mapping instructions.

I have Not noticed any problems with WP version 4.2. If you have changed versions of the plugin, you may need to force updating the settings, there are different options on different versions of the plugin; uncheck something and save, then set each option how you want, to force updating the settings.
