• Up until now, my sites had the following url structure:
    mainsite.domain.com
    site2.mainsite.domain.com
    site3.mainsite.domain.com

with the domain mapping plugin I was able to get the structure I wanted:

    mainsite.domain.com
    site2.domain.com
    site3.domain.com

I’ve just created a new site in WordPress 3.9.1 and noticed things look a little different. I also noticed my new site was working without adding the domain mapping. So for testing, I removed the MU domain mapping plugin and to my surprise everything still works!

Has the domain mapping been added to core WordPress? Or maybe it’s a plugin that is doing it for me? I’ve added BuddyPress and Gravity Forms recently, so maybe that is something to do with it?

Has the domain mapping been added to core WordPress?

That’s in progress but hasn’t been completed yet. My guestimate on it being completely rolled in is version 4.4 or so.

You maybe never did need this plugin.

Apache hosting with wildcard DNS handles site2.mainsite.domain.com to site2.domain.com. (On the hosting accounts I’ve had, they all are in /home/username/public_html/site2 not /home/username/public_html/mainsite/site2 )

Said another way, (at least most) Apache hosting doesn’t “properly” handle sub1-sub2-domains, treating them as sub1-domains.

The Domain Mapping plugin handles site2.mainsite.domain.com to otherdomain.com or https://www.otherdomain.com (or the more common site2.domain.com to otherdomain.com) and mainsite.domain.com to mainsite.com

(Note: Doesn’t sound like you did this, but for others trying to set up their site, for the Domain Mapping plugin to work, you can’t create an actual subdomain (using CPanel, etc), but instead let WordPress manage the “virtual subdomains” with wildcard DNS.)
