Is it possible to downgrade from 2.5 to 2.3.x without restoring the entire database (and thereby loosing posts) ? I.e. can I just restore the website files and keep the database as-is ?

The reason for asking is that I feel there’s simply too much I don’t like or can’t figure out in 2.5, for example the uploader works poorly, it uploads the pics but instead of a nice title they always get the filename as the title. Or inserting them into the text, there’s no option to insert the full image like before, only the small preview image gets inserted.

And then there’s the new admin interface. At first I thought it nice and new, now after using it for a few days it’s just slow and hard to navigate. I mean before I used to have what I needed on the front panel, some posts, some comments and that thingy from wordpress about news. Now I have some developments I don’t read, some pluginbox I don’t read, and everythings just much harder to locate for some reason.

And no, I had no plugins at all (well now I do have one, I found the “no flash plugin” for 2.5 which I just had to give a try to see if my misery would end), I have only a theme but with or without it, the problems remain. Yes it may be me not reading up about all new stuff, but in general I upgraded because wordpress recommended it and I try to keep up with upgrades due to security issues, I did not really need all the new stuff, however fancy it may be.

Thus my question, or to put it another way, is there some way to keep 2.5 but get the old admin ui back ? An Admin UI theme sort of ?

  • Personally, I have no plans of downgrading due to the many security issues that have been announced.

Other than that, a big “Amen” to all your other comments. I don’t see 2.5 making my life any easier. A bit prettier perhaps, but definitely not easier.

It’s easy to downgrade “IF” you backed up your “DATABASE” first. If not you have a problem.

autobengal, your wordpress loads fast on my side,
are you on a dedicated server?

Some people have been working on fixes for this. See the last couple of pages of this thread:

You are certainly not the only one unhappy with the 2.5 admin changes.

autobengal, well yes I did, but I’ve been using it since and so there’s a number of unbacked posts. Which was why I wanted to check whether it was possible to revert without downgrading the database.

StrangeAttractor, thanks for the tip, it seems I ought to stick with this version a little while and see what happens.

At least I think I’ve sorted out the posting problem, every time I try to post using IE6 the server becomes unavailable, but posting via Firefox works fine except formatting works poorly, so I’ve found that by writing a stub and posting it via Firefox I can edit formatting in IE as I like it, but I can’t repost it although saving works so I can save and then repost in FF… Oh well…. ??

If you really want to downgrade to 2.3.3 and you did not make a backup, you can do it by downgrading and then manually changing your password in phpMyAdmin as it talks about here:
    https://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/phpmyadmin/

Note that a backup restore is still recommended. This might not work properly.

Thanks, I think I’ll close the topic here, I did make a backup as I wrote, but I wanted to check whether I could revert without it, but from the postings made here and elsewhere it looks like the database structure is altered and it is most likely not possible, so I guess that’s it.
If I get the time I might try around with first an sql restore and then importing missing posts via xml.
    Thanks anyway everyone!
