• Tried with my theme CosmosWP and couldn’t make it work… I wonder if there’s anything I can do with it?

    Hi @wccmcd

It’s a paid theme so unfortunately I’m not able to test it.

But if the theme has options to modify the excerpt length then it means they handle it in their own way in which case our plugin won’t work since it targets the WordPress way of displaying the excerpts.

Does the theme have options related to excerpts?

    Thanks @wukube for your reply.

Yeah the theme has an option to set the length of word to display and an option of displaying “read more” after the excerpt.

It has a free version which is what I’m using now. It also has a paid version if I need more features.

I guess I have to contact the theme author then.

    Thanks anyway,

Oh, you’re right, there’s a free version. Yesterday I googled it, clicked the first result and the site didn’t mention a free version.

But yeah, I see the free version now.

I activated the theme to test it out and for the default blog posts listing it’s working fine. Which makes sense, that’s all the default behavior that themes are required to have and is what our plugin was originally meant to work with.

I then tried importing the “Blog 1” demo. Doesn’t work on it. It’s a custom Gutenberg block and it doesn’t seem to have the regular excerpt filters applied.

That Gutenberg block seems to come from the “Gutentor Blocks” plugin. https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/gutentor/

So the theme author probably won’t be able to assist much with this.

I’ll have to dig a bit deeper in there and see how they handle things and figure out if there’s something that can be done to make it compatible.

The quick response you gave was very impressive, thank you very much @wupkube .

The Gutentor plugin is actually belongs to the same company. You may check it out here https://www.acmeit.org/

So it is very possible that the theme used some special block or filters from their own. Unfortunately they didn’t reply timely after I created a tech support ticket – either they are too busy in developing their products or they are short of manpower to do the customer service.

Anyways, I probably need to switch to another theme since I need the function badly. So, don’t bother to work on that theme if it doesn’t mean too much to you.

    Thank you very much,

The plugin is great for the regular “old way” blog posts themes, but when various page builders and Gutenberg is used things change a bit.

But if you have issues with the next theme as well let me know and I’ll dig in there and hopefully find a way to filter out their excerpt output and make the plugin compatible.

Thank you very much @wpkube . I moved to OceanWP. Havn’t got a time to test your plugin – is it compatible with that theme?

    Hi @wccmcd

I tried OceanWP, imported the “Personal” demo, and it did not work.

BUT, I checked the theme’s code, they do handle the excerpts filtering themselves unless the excerpt length (in the theme options) is set to 500 (the maximum allowed), in that case it lets WordPress handle the output which means our plugin can take over and handle it.

You’ll find the excerpt length option in WP Admin > Appearance > Customize > Blog > Blog Entries, set it to the max (500).
