• WordPress looks great, but I can’t make heads nor tails of the installation instructions. I’m not usually so dense in the this sort of thing, but I can’t figure it out.

Perhaps I have some misconceptions. All I want is a place to run my blog for free. I don’t have a hosting service or anything like that. Am I in the right place?

If not, can someone recommend a site?

    Thanks!

Am I in the right place?

Probably not. Get your feet wet first and head over to WordPress.COM. You can sign up for a free blog there.

I’m having similar problems. Yesterday I spent hours downloading a web installer and installing Word Press from www.ads-software.com. I wanted initially to load it on my computer locally until I get a web domain and hosting sorted.

Finally got my Dashboard to come up on the screen, left it on the screen overnight and created a shortcut to the link.

This morning I went to my Dashboard I’d left open but it had disappeared and the shortcut didn’t work.

I have spent several more hours today trying to get the dashboard to open, reinstall wordpress, etc, etc, etc and now I’m stuck

Can anyone help/give me some suggestions?

    Thanks
    Jane

Yeah – I cant figure out how to do anything so far – I may not be a computer programmer, but I’m not an idiot. I thought this was supposed to be simple! After consulting the starting info pages, I can not find any of the activate buttons, and so far have not found any way to upload images, which is what I wanted.

Well, for me, Jan Dembowski was right. Thank you! I actually was in the wrong place! I’m working on my blog now, and it really is simple. Thanks, Jan!

You are entirely welcome. ?? Have fun with your new blog.

Great news for you, well done. I don’t want to use wordpress.com for a live site just yet.

I just want to be able to access the local copy of the website dashboard I could access last night but now can’t, so if anyone can help it will stop me getting more and more frustrated.

I am not a computer programmer but I do know how to use CMS’s and websites and so am not dumb but this has me stumped – and several people told me wordpress would be the easiest, cheapest route to take. I remain to be convinced!

Jane did you install a server on your computer to work locally as wordpress works with php and Mysql database and for that you need to install a wamp or Xampp if on windows or Mamp if on mac.

    Hi, thanks for replying.

I did install Xampp on windows. What’s puzzling is that I got my dashboard up last night but today it’s disappeared into thin air!

I’ve tried reinstalling wordpress but it fails even if I try to use the existing database or create a new one.

    Annoying!

    Jane

That is bit odd as you working locally it should be there have you checked xampp/htdocs folder if wordpress folder is still there.

Where would the wordpress folder normally live? I can’t see it on my C: drive actually. I have MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server folders.

If you using Xampp you should have wordpress folder in htdocs.
htdocs is root and has other files there that are used to display the xampp when you go https://localhost so wordpress has to be in folder name what ever you want.
To get to it you will have this in address bar
    https://localhost/foldername

Oops! I’m getting a bit lost now. Should I have Xampp as a folder on my C: drive? What would foldername be after https://localhost/ ?

Last night when I created a shortcut from the url displayed at the top of my wordpress dashboard page it worked. Now it doesn’t. The url was https://localhost:(then a 5 digit number)/wp-admin.php.

But every time I got to this url it says page not found. Some other help suggested to delete temporary internet files and allow cookies, both of which I did but still the same problem.

Is it going to be simpler to create a wordpress.com site? My only concern is that I don’t ultimately want my website to have wordpress.com at the end of it.

If I create a wordpress.com site can I move that to my own domain name when I decide what domain name I want and who I want to host it?

I really appreciate your respones, thanks so much for trying to help.

    Jane

You can create your site at wordpress.com but the snag is there are restrictions you will have to use the themes and plugins they have installed you can not install your own.

Yes you can always move your wordpress to your own host later once you have a host and domain name.

When you installed Xampp did you not install in your C drive as Xampp can not be installed in C:\programfiles it has to be in C:\

Ahh………not where it installed, I just used an auto installer (probably a bad idea, but easier!)

Have checked C: root directory and cannot see Xampp………drat!

What’s the easiest way of reinstalling Xampp to root C: directory?

wordpress.com will be no good for the website I want to create then as I want to be able to use an interactive map plug in which they don’t have for the country I need (France), although they have Poland – great, or not for me!!

Thanks again for your help. I am determined to beat this snag, so maybe I can with your help, thank you.
