• WordPress looks great, but I can’t make heads nor tails of the installation instructions. I’m not usually so dense in the this sort of thing, but I can’t figure it out.

Perhaps I have some misconceptions. All I want is a place to run my blog for free. I don’t have a hosting service or anything like that. Am I in the right place?

If not, can someone recommend a site?

    Thanks!

  • You still have file you downloaded if so just reinstall Xampp and make sure you install in C:\ drive.

well, it seems that even this is determined to be difficult. I have found xampp install download but it then comes up with pdf creator download. Aaarrrrrrrghhhhhhhh!

    I’ll keep trying.

    Thanks again

thought i was going well but my xampp installation has turned into something called ilivid?!?!?!??!?

You can download from this link https://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

Thanks. Yes, that’s the url I used to download it again this evening but it doesn’t give me the application, it just installs ilivid which does nothing.

So, I’m about to give up on wordpress…………….

That is bit odd I have Xampp working locally downloaded from same site.

Yes, odd indeed. I really don’t know what to do now.

Well, I am trying again this morning. Have started a new installation but it is failing with web platform instaler program when I try to create a new database.

    Getting the error message:

    The source is invalid
    Cannot connect to the database
Access denied for user “root@localhost” (using password: YES)

Tried again a second time but whatever information I put in to create a new database I get the same error, just a different access denied for x@localhost

So, now I really don’t know what to do

Did you get to install Xampp

Did you create a password to use Xampp if so you need to use that.

The other option you have is uninstall Xampp and try Wamp I have article and video on my website shows you how install Wamp and make changes to files and install wordpress.

You can’t create a database via the WordPress web installer… at least that’s what it sounds like you’re attempting.

You have to create your database first, and *then* run the wordpress installer from your browser. You can create a database via phpmyadmin, which comes with XAMPP (https://localhost/phpmyadmin).

    Hi

    Thanks for both replies.

Yes, I reinstalled Xampp and it created Apache and SQL files but I still can’t access wordpress.

I’ve just tried using localhost/phpmyadmin and I get an error

    Error
    MySQL said:

#1045 – Access denied for user ‘root’@’localhost’ (using password: NO)

Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

Have you created the database and user for database if so use that to login
    localhost/phpmyadmin

It sounds like you set a root mysql password somewhere along the way without realizing it.

You can reset the XAMPP mysql root password by going to https://localhost/security/xamppsecurity.php

I have decided that it’s just not going to work trying to set something up on my computer, it’s just too difficult and I have wasted a lot of time which could have been sent creating content pages!

The only reason I was looking at www.ads-software.com software was because I thought I wouldn’t be able to use the wordpress.com software as I want to have a 3rd party clickable map in the site I create.

Do either of you know whether I’d be able to add straight html code into a page for this on a wordpress.com site?

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my dumb questions.
