    Hi,

I installed and extensively modified the style.css of Sliding Door (SD) 2.3.1 and it is currently running on WP 3.2.1

I didn’t understand child themes back then and SD only had the Black version.

So, I just basically hacked the style.css to render a White SD theme. I haven’t done any upgrading since then, because I knew I’d have to do a lot of CSS work to produce a child theme as well as whatever else might go wrong in an upgrade.

Now, 5+ yrs later, I need to move the site to a different host and Updraft doesn’t move the WP part, and needs a WP environment on the new server to do it the Updraft way (the easy way). I figured that meant it was a darn good time to upgrade everything prior to the move and have a fresh WP 4.6 on the new machine to restore the Updraft backup on.

So, reading here, I see that I should upgrade SD first. Since there is now a White SD, I figured I could upgrade and then switch to the White SD, then do the WP upgrade to 4.6. all on the current server.

Then, do the Updraft thing and put it on the fresh install of WP 4.6 on the new server. Then, do my child theme stuff, on the new machine. Since it will be White, it won’t take as long to do the child theme, I’m thinking.

Sounds like a plan, right? Is it a good plan? What is likely to go wrong? What do I need to watch out for?

    Upgrading SD 2.3.1 to 3.2.4
    Upgrading WP 3.2.1 to 4.6

Any advice would be much appreciated. The website is https://www.darlingtonmutual.com

    Thanks!
    Stephen

Because you are starting completely fresh on the new WordPress host, I would say export your old posts, import them into the new WordPress, and download a fresh version of sliding door onto the new WordPress hosting account. You can then play around with it and try and get it looking like you would like it to.

If you decide that there were too many customisations on your old site and you’d like to go back to that older version of sliding door, you can just delete the newer version of sliding door from the new host and copy across the old version from your other server.

But over the years there have been lots of upgrades to the theme so I think you will be happier with the newer version.

You are in a good position to play around with the new theme on the new server because you still have a complete backup on your old server.

Everything went fine. First, I upgraded SD. Then, I upgraded WP–no hicups–smooth as a baby’s bottom. The “white SD” was really close to what I needed and not much went into the child theme to have it render the style I had established years ago with the original “dark only” SD to make it white.

I had to brush up on the functionality of the SD images–the images needed their paths updated–I had been storing them previously in a folder outside of WP. I brought them into the media library and updated the paths. No problems encountered.

All in all, no hair-pulling, no nail-chewing angst–a successful process. I wish more adventures didn’t have Murphy tagging along–he stayed at home this time. So often, it seems that if something can go wrong, something will go wrong. Thanks. Great theme.
