Hi all. I’m asking here because I really couldn’t find a solution anywhere.

I’m nearing the most recent chapter of my webcomic. Every 4 chapters I put out a “chapter book”. This is the 8th chapter. (Yay!) The dilemma: I am planning on a short story to go inside the chapter book compilation. I also want to put it on the website.

The website readers are divided into paying members and nonpaying members. So obviously the side story would be for the paying members.

The problem here is if I just put it in the normal comic easel feed it will do two annoying things. 1. It will break up the story, and although I know Girl Genius does it a lot and does well I just don’t like that. 2. I’m using s2Member. Because the side story would break up the flow, regular folks (as it were) would always be interrupted in their reading experience when they hit this area they can’t access. There’s nothing I can do about that through s2member. I’ve tried.

So what I wanna know is: is there another way to display a comic than by having this straight feed using comic easel? I’ve read what I can on documentation and went as far as I understand. (Which isn’t very far.) Aaaand. I’m stumped.

Okay need you to explain ‘straight feed’ ..

If you’re using s2member then you should be enabling the /comic/chapter/postname/ option inside of the comic -> config -> archive [tab] – the option to enable chapters to show up in the url

then you specify a chapter for the public, one for the private (paid) and then you can have another public one for a side story

then you enable the option for navigating per chapter only, so that the navigation stays on the chapter

then, in the comic -> config you have the front page display the chapter that is declared public only, and have a thumbnail widget in a sidebar to link to the sidestory .. users click that and it goes to the public side story and has nothing to do with the main story cause navigation will only be on it

Wow, thank you for such a speedy reply.

I do have the chapters enabled in the url.

I’m looking at the rest of your instructions and trying to grok how to specify chapters for public vs private. I’ve been reading your post for 2 days now on it. I’m overworked and exhausted right now, so that isn’t helping.

I think I see what you’re talking about as I play with the settings, but I’m not sure I can set the chapters back and forth. I’ve had a very hard time with s2member all along, and since I can’t afford to buy it I’ve gotten very little support on the matter. Their documentation reads like string theory.

I know there are a lot of good comics I simply stopped bothering with because finding the latest page was a big pain. So I don’t want that to happen. I want the latest page to display to members.

Right now the way it’s set up, if you’re not logged in it shows the latest public page.

in s2member there’s a way to restrict access by URI .. that’s where you want to look
