• Hello Polylang,

First time trying to use a plugin for translation. I came across Polylang and watched a video which seemed odd.

In the (official) video, the lady presenter shows how easy it is to add a second language (French in that case). Indeed, it looks very easy. click the icon, it creates a new POST/PAGE but…the page that is now to be edited for the French translation is EMPTY! In other words, it looks like you have to create that page from scratch not only for content but also for structure. That does not seem right.

I want to set up a simple bilingual site. French is the primary language and English the secondary. I use the Total theme and WPBakery (visual Composer) to build my pages. Once a page has been carefully structure, with content in French, I want to translate the content on the fly, manually. So the ideal situation, something that WPML has confirmed is possible with their plugin, is that when you click on the icon to add an English translation for a page, the page editor does not come up blank, but instead has the whole page structure and contents of the French page. I then just want to go over the French text and manually translate it to English. So there is no new page structure to create and the content is already nicely laid out and I just need to translate it.

I realise that I should somehow be using templates to recreate pages more quickly, but it just strikes me as an added layer of complexity and possible confusion, so I wondered if it could be done as mentioned above instead.

Is that not possible in Polylang? Or did I get confused with that video? (I am really sorry: it was an official video but I just cannot find the url for it right now…).

Finally, I would be grateful if you could tell me whether the language switch item that I would add to my top menu can be based of graphics (flags, rather than text, as I saw it demonstrated elsewhere.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

    All the best

    Christophe

  • After you are done creating your primary language page, and after you have saved them, go in the area which contains the structure of your page and press Ctrl-A and then Ctrl-C. You have just copied your page. Now go to the English translation, go in the same space where you copied your page from, and press Ctrl-V. Presto!

All you have to do now, is translate the French text to English.

And yes, you can have your language switcher in your menu, with flags only.

To get an idea, check out one of the sites I maintain in https://certs-it.com.

    I hope this helps.
