I’ve put off dealing with this for a while, but can’t do so any more. As near as I can tell, the vast majority of the issues that I, myself, have run into as well as a large number of the ones I read on this forum are due to something in the theme that someone is using. Specific case in point right now – the giant black boxes around the footer elements of this page. There are no borders defined for any of those blocks when you look at them in the editor, yet there they clearly are. I’ve looked at every level of the block parent chain, and there are no borders defined at any level.

I found the “Patterns” for the 2024 style which is currently applied, and it looks like maybe that is where these borders are coming from? Maybe? I tried duplicating the footer block and editing my copy of it, but once again, in spite of the very obvious giant black borders around the items, there are no borders defined at any level of the block structure. So I am left, still, with no way of removing them, because I have no clue where they are coming from.

As near as I can tell, there is no way to just start from scratch and build out your own home page using the provided blocks/builder tools. It forces you to choose a template, and then you are locked into whatever hidden things exist in that template that you cannot change (like the borders around the footer items in the 2024 style/theme/template/whatever; the terminology is woefully inconsistent). Is there something that I am just missing here? I tried using the Kenta Blocks thing for a while, and it was no better than the “vanilla” WP blocks/editor/builder.

WordPress won’t display without a theme.

Instead of giving up on themes entirely, I recommend starting with a theme that is as close as possible to what you like so customization is minimal. These are all free and use the new Site Editor, so they’re easier to work with than classic themes: https://www.ads-software.com/themes/tags/full-site-editing/

Here’s some documentation for the Site Editor:?https://www.ads-software.com/documentation/article/site-editor/

And here’s a full video tutorial if you prefer that:?https://learn.www.ads-software.com/tutorial/intro-to-the-site-editor-and-template-editor/

If you run into trouble with the theme you choose, which again I recommend starting with something close to what you want, you can reach out to theme’s support for specialized assistance.

Thanks for the reply, James; good to know I’m not completely crazy at least. I will keep poking at the available themes, and I do appreciate the pointer for specific themes to look at. I’ve also found some good info on creating custom WP themes, so worst case scenario I can go that route. Honestly, WP is overkill for what I am attempting to accomplish right this moment, but I’m also trying to future proof things to allow me room to grow as things go forward.

Anyway, thanks again; have a great day.
