I’m not entirely sure how it happened, I think it all started when my computer got a virus and I had to system restore. I tried to fix it, made it worse I’m pretty sure. and somehow I got to a point where the tables in my database don’t exist. and now the only thing I have from the point where my site worked flawlessly is my www folder. I unfortunately don’t have a copy of the database from a point where it worked. after a lot of frustration, and many un-installs and re-installs, the only thing I have left to work with is a copy of my entire wamp base while it wasn’t working (before I tried to fix it) and the www folder while the site was working.
so I suppose I’m trying ask, is it possible to get my site to work from only the www folder? is it possible to recreate everything else? Or would it be better to start from scratch and trash the ruins?

  • I’m sorry for all your problems. The bad news is that your posts, pages and comments are or were in your database. Any images and media is in wp-content/uploads and should still be there.

Other than your images and any media you uploaded, there is nothing in WWW that would not be replaced by a new WordPress install.

It’s somewhat unusual to loose everything in a database but of course, anything is possible. If the posts table is still available, then your posts, pages and comments can, at the very least, be manually retrieved and pasted into a new site. This information may be available even if the table is damaged.

About how many pages and posts do you think you had in your site before it was damaged? Do you have this information in some form (like Word)? If comments are important to you, how many of those do you think you had.

How have determined that your database tables are empty?

I can make some suggestions when I know more about your situation.

hmm. I see what you’re saying. I had about 20-30 pages, but no comments.
well, when I look at the database, it shows the table, but when i try to open one of the things in the table it says the table doesn’t exist. where would I find my pages in the folder? it would be interesting if I could transfer them to my new site manually.

I apologize as I’m fairly new to this, so I’m unsure what kind of technical information would be the most helpful.

You didn’t say if your had the 20-30 pages in some form, like Word or if your database is the only place you might have the text from your old site.

You would use phpmyadmin located in your hosting account to work in your database. Your post table will be at wp_posts. It’s possible that the wp_ prefix has been changed. When you find the table push Browse and look at the table. To see more, you can choose edit and read one record.

Go all the way to your last record to see if everything seems to be there. If it is, I can help you export the data to a spreadsheet as text to make it easier for you to work with.

If you have concerns, Google for visual information about moving around in a WordPress database.

Let me know what you find or if you have any questions.

thank you for all of your help! but I just decided to start over on the site as I couldn’t locate the old database. so sorry for all the trouble! and thank you for your help! I’ll be sure to make backups of my database from now on

Best of luck with your new site. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.
