• I was using Jetpack and I loved it. I was only using the following features:

    Spellcheck
    Publicize
    Social media sharing icons
    Popular posts

Things were fine until my site had some error issues and my webhost told me “You are going to have to reduce the memory footprint to stabilize the site. Removing all non-essential plugins [specifically Jetpack] should go a long way to reducing the memory footprint.

Jetpack in particular is a very bloated plugin as it has a lot of features and mini-plugins built-in. Jetpack’s source code is even bigger than the WordPress code. If you are not using majority of its features, it will be best to deactivate and delete it.

Your site has 1 GB of memory. In the current form, if 17 people hit the home page of your site at the same time, it will consume all of the memory for your entire server, resulting in dropped traffic, error messages, or even down time for all sites on the server.

It would actually be best to use individual plugins instead of using a plugin bloated with features which you are not really fully using.

Having Jetpack and only using the 4 features you mentioned is like having a Gaming computer but using it only for Facebook and other social media sites.”

I have never had more than 10 visitors to my site at 1 time. Please advise as to whether my webhost is correct. thanks!

Let’s clear some things up here…

    1. If a module is deactivated, its code doesn’t run on your site. So it doesn’t have any effect on the memory usage.

    2. Out of the four modules that are actually used on your site, two are only accessible in the dashboard, for logged-in users (Publicize and Spellcheck). So these 2 modules have no effect whatsoever on the home page loading speed.

    3. The Sharing module does make calls to third-party services (Facebook, Twitter, etc), but you can minimize those by using a display option other than “Official buttons.”

    4. All the indexing and calculations for Related Posts are done on our end. The only thing that happens on your site is a call to data stored in custom fields. That’s nothing.

So the problem might not be caused by Jetpack, but by another plugin. You should investigate to find out more.

For example, try deactivating all your plugins and running some more tests. Does that make a difference? Activate one plugin at a time, running tests after each, to see which ones cause problems.

Also, can you let me know who your host is? We might try reaching out to them to see if their clients are having widespread issues.

    Thanks!
