Is my blog lost? (Crisis mode!)

  • Hi everyone

    I am in trouble. I changed the name of the folder WordPress rests in on the server and boom – the blog was gone.

    I followed the instructions for changing folder name on Yahoo’s Host Support. BUT their advice seemed not to know about version 2.0 and the need to delete the wp-content/cache file

    I tried to get the blog back but can’t get it up again. I hope the blog can be restored but I don’t know how. The blog has over 2000 files and 3000 page views a day so I am biting my fingernails here.

    Do you guys have any advice?

    The WordPress help page has one step for version 2.0 which is missing
    in your page:

    “9. WordPress 2.0 only: Delete the folder wp-content/cache.”

    I guess this is why I could change the name of the folder WordPress is
    in today according to your receipe, but I could not get the blog up as
    default home page despite having set it as homepage in your File
    Manager and in WordPress itself as instructed.

    I am now restoring my blog from backup and will try again with the new
    instructions. If you could update your help page accordingly I am sure
    it would be helpful for users.

    Hello again

    I need help to get my wordpress blog back online. I have tried to restore it from files I had backed up but it doesn’t work. I had a backup of files in the then active “blog” folder (some 65MB) but not of the database.

    I have experimented with opening new blogs and moving things around, and changing the home page in the WordPress Control Panel but I am not getting anywhere.

    As I mentioned in my first email I believe the cause of my problem is a missing line in your instruction re changing the name of the blog folder. I wanted to change it from

    gayboythailand.com/blog
    to
    gayboythailand.com/bangkok

    since the “blog” in the URL give me irrelevant Adsense ads while “bangkok” will fit the blog.

    You should be able to see from the size which of my blogs is the real one – it is much larger than the play-blogs.

  • Hmmm.
    2000 files in a WP blog? WP does NOT store the content in files – everything is in the database!
    If you cannot backup/restore the database, you didn’t do anything ??

    I don’t know what is in the Y. instructions (they never get it well…) but if you just changed the folder name and did NOT modify the settings in your WP install, of course, it won’t show up.

    Hi Moshu

    I saw that MSN search had 2800 results for my blog, I assumed that was “files”.. or pages.. or something!

    I changed the settings in the WordPress Control Panel for URI and the line below it from /blog to /bangkok (the blog went 404) and blank… and then changed the folder name in the Yahoo File Manager from /blog to /bangkok.. that was all I was supposed to do!

    Oh and now I see version 2.0 and 2.01 use cashe but not 2.02… and I use 2.02 at Yahoo.

    And now I don’t know which folder to point the database to… should I try them one after another? I THINK one named https://www.gayboythailand.com/bangkok2 is the right one… Is there any danger selecting the wrong blog folder?

    The two settings in the databass should point to the real, physical location (folder) of the WP install.

    Thank you for the link to the MySQL link…

    There are three databases in MySQL… blog, blog1 and blog3… They are Yahoo’s default names…I put “blog” to point to the URL with the same name… But where is my content? There were hundreds of posts… they are gone. All the databases are empty.

    And the Yahoo control panel says size of database: 0 MB

    I have a bad feeling about this.

    I wrote Yahoo Hosting asking them if they can restore my WordPress database from backup.

    If they can I expect I have to pay for it.

    Yahoo Support say they have sent my email to the engineers since it involves restoring the database.

    I see that mysql is set to delete erased content after one month. Until then what is erased is only marked “deleted”, but it can be recovered.

    I don’t dare trying to do this myself. Better leave it to the specialists? Agreed?

    If you get things back, leave Yahoo.
    Immediately.
    Get a backup into your computer and go.

    “If” I get things back… I wish that was “when”…

    I see that my blog occupy 163MB of data on my account. So the database must be there.

    The 64MB that I took backup of (the blog folder) turned out to be my pop star picture collection, which is integrated in the blog via the “singapore” plug-in.

    In the 40 hours since the crash the response from Yahoo consists of one email.

    Are you sure you changed both the site-url and home value? It looks to me like one of them changed and one didn’t.

    I did change both as instructed… but one of them was in the Yahoo control panel, which supposedly should make it easier to change where the database pointed to.

    3 days and no word from Yahoo Web Hosting about what if anything they can do. To fill the URL with something I started a new blog at gayboythailand.com/bangkok-thailand/

    This was up for a while, but then I get the following error message instead of the main page:

    Error establishing a database connection

    This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at mysql. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

    Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
    Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
    Are you sure that the database server is running?
    If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

    When I tried to use FTP to look I got “530 maximum number of simultanious sessions already active”.

    Leave Yahoo.
    Go find a webhost that knows what bloggers need.

    You have installed several blogs in your Hosting account.
    Blog databases are created with numbers in their name pertaining to the
    sequence in which they were installed, ie blog, blog2, blog3, and so
    on.
    In your database directory we have found the blog, blog1 and blog3
    databases.
    In the weekly server backups from 2 weeks ago we found the blog2
    database.
    Because this is the blog databse that was missing from the sequence,
    and because it is the only database we had in the backup which was not
    already in your database directory, we have restored the blog2 database
    to your database directory.
