I have a very large site (21k posts) that receives a good amount of traffic, I’m considering this for a way to significantly reduce the load on our server.

Are we too large for the scope of this plugin? Also, does it handle the front page of the WordPress install? Is a new HTML file generated each time there is a post?

    Thanks!

  • That is a very large site indeed! I would love to say that Simply Static would work well for you, but unfortunately, there are a couple things that are going to make the plugin less-than-enjoyable for you to use:

    1. The main problem is that it regenerates the entire site, every time. Even if you were just to add one new post.
    2. The other issue is that Simply Static doesn’t provide any kind of progress notification, so you’d just see the page spinning for a really, really long time.

I do plan to fix these eventually, but it’s probably a few months out at least. If you’d like I can reply back or shoot you an email when I think it’s in better shape for you.

To answer your other question, yes, it does handle the front page of the WordPress install.

And thanks so much for asking these questions! It made me realize I should add something to the FAQ about the current limitations of the plugin.

For the average hosting environment what would you say are the limits of the plugin in it’s current state?

That’s a great question to which I don’t have a good answer at the moment. I’ll try it out on shared hosting in the next week or two and see if I can come up with a rough ballpark.

So on my El Cheapo $5/month hosting plan, the limit is almost exactly 100 posts. My host times out after 60 seconds, and Simply Static was processing 100 posts in 58-59 seconds.

I’ll just come out and say it: that’s pathetic.

I’ll be releasing version 1.2 shortly which is a bit faster, but not enough to improve the number of pages you can generate by very much.

Look for version 1.3 to completely fix this issue. It’s my next priority, because seeing the results of that is saddening/infuriating.

How long will it take if it is compiled on a local machine and only changes are delta copied to ftp?

Hard to say, it would depend entirely on the specs of the machine running WordPress. About the best I could tell you would be to just try it out.

    Hello!

First of all, amazing plugin when tested on smaller sites! Do you have any progress or status on the development for the issue with larger sites? (That is, any eta when v1.3 could be live?)

    Hi adners,

Thank you for the kind comments! Yes, I do have an update on v1.3.0. We’re nearly done with it and it should be releasing within the next week or so.

    Best,
    Scott
