Is my WordPress generating email spam?

    Hi folks, I’ve been using WordPress for over a year now, but I’ve got a problem that’s really confounding me – hopefully someone can help.

    Dreamhost shut down my website a couple of days ago claiming that my WordPress installation has “been exploited and was being used to send out spam emails”.

    I’ve never heard of WordPress doing this before, Goggled it and can’t find anything referring to WordPress being ‘exploited’ in this way. Does anyone else know what’s going on here or is Dreamhost talking nonsense?

  • DH talking nonsense ? It’s a regular occurrence here.

    Did DH deign to explain or did they just take your money and close the door ?

    Closed the door, Podz. They’ve ‘identified’ the source as being the root index.php in my installation. If you look at the site you get ‘No input file specified’ in FireFox. IE gives you nothing.

    The whole thing sounds preposterous! I’ve been back and forth by email, but getting nothing useful in response. “Try contacting the authors of wordpress for a patch” was the latest stunning advice. I’m on version 2.0, for crying out loud!

    On your next blog, use their name as the title of the post. Use their name in the body of the post and – like with all things blogging – say your bit.

    In the meantime, they took your money and really should be proving their point. But they won’t.

    They are still a ‘preferred host’ for WP – you might want to mention something: [email protected]

    Podz – genius. I think I’ll email the hosting address, this is ridiculous! I had no idea the support was so poor.

    Any recommendations for a future host? Media Temple?

    I’ve heard good things about Media Temple.
    In the two years of hanging around here I have not seen a single complaint about Laughing Squid.
    A Small Orange are also excellent.

    There are of course many others ??
